Deontay Wilder Takes Bronze Medal

Saturday August 23, 2008
The 2008 Olympics are over for the U.S. boxing team and - thanks to the least experienced boxer on the squad - they've won't be coming home empty-handed. Heavyweight Deontay Wilder lost his semi-final match to Italy’s Clemente Russo by a score of 7-1 but he still receives a bronze medal for reaching the semi-finals (two bronze medals are awarded in each weight-class).

Winning a bronze medal is an impressive individual achievement for the 22-year-old Wilder who only started boxing three years ago. However, for the team, winning a single bronze medal ranks as the worst performance in U.S. Olympic boxing history. The last time an American team won only one medal at an Olympics was in 1948, but that medal was silver.

I’m a USA Florida Amateur Boxing Judge and would like for someone to explain how the (5) olympic judges could only give Deontay Wilder (1) point in his last match. These Olympic Scoring Rules have to be changed or you won’t see any good US boxers competing. They will turn pro before being becoming Olympic Boxers.

I am a former Amateur boxer and am “familiar” with the situation. I blame the ADMINISTRATION at Colorado Springs. Somehow/someway they have had PEOPLE come into their Admin structure how do not truly “give a damn” about the Sport. What’s that got to do with an athletic performance? Well, it’s effect is far reaching.
I feel this has been “a problem” there for -some time- -now- Even, I contacted THEM about three mo ago about some sort of record book details and the effort I received back was a complete “Non-effort”. John_Wilkinson-History@live.com
