De La Hoya and Pacquiao will be coming from opposite directions to meet at the welterweight limit of 147 pounds. De La Hoya has not weighed in below 150 pounds since 2001. Pacquiao began his career in 1995 at 106 pounds and moved up to 135 for the first time in his most recent bout.
De La Hoya reportedly considered other fighters but Floyd Mayweather retired. Felix Trinidad and Miguel Cotto are coming off losses. There's no way Oscar wanted any part of either Antonio Margarito or Paul Williams -- too much risk without sufficient reward. Sergio Mora and Ricky Hatton were viewed as lower risk options but also significantly lower reward. Targeting Pacquiao is classic De La Hoya: Pacquiao represents the most intriguing opponent available ... and the biggest possible payday - by far.

This fight is a joke. Pacman versus De La Hoya, thats like the big show show and money REALLY fighting. No doubt manny is the better fighter, but the weight difference negates that… This is a farce fight, a joke, a shameful farewell for a pussy fighter, who instead of fighting the best opposition like he brags he wants to he fights a smaller, lighter man whos never fought above 135, how dare Oscar, Ive lost all my respect for him, and if your siked for this match you must be a real casual fan of boxing, someone with no understanding of what it actually is… Styles make fights, and so do physical advantages…There’s no contest here, even though I hope Pacman would beat up on Oscar its still a fight that shouldnt happen. Why not put Jermain Taylor versus Mayweather, or Hatton versus ivan calderon its the same thing. Oscar used to be good for the sport, a shining star, now he’s just like all these other money hungry fighters, he’s become the very person he opposes, Mr. OScar de la money

After the showing of the 2008 USA Boxing team, one cannot understand the poor performance that let down a nation. The fact that a team like China has a gold medalist and the USA cannot even get a silver medal is pathetic. How does a kid like John Paul Cullinane not on that team? Did he fight for Ireland? Is he still hurt? Why is Curtis Stevens a pro now? Despite some success, he should have been held out for these olympics. With a gold medal you can get greater endorsements and bring some respect back to this sport and country. If those two had gone and we had a real coach like Curtis’ uncle Andre Rosier, that would have been two automatic golds. I just don’t get it. With every decent or even poor fight on paperview, our children will not be watching the sport and it’s future in this country is severely in jeopardy. We should be sending our best, and clearly…we did not.
De La Hoya nearly beat Mayweather. He lost because of a bad habit – curtailing his offense at odd times, like he did against Trinidad and others. His skills are sharp, his conditioning is good, even if he isn’t at his absolute prime – he is not a shot fighter. He is accurate, smart, and hits nearly as hard and as well in combination as ever.
Pacquiao will make it interesting, and will certainly pressure him with effective shots at high volume from difficult angles. If Forbes demonstrated a defensive weakness in DLH, then it is one Manny can exploit, also being short and able to move in and out with sharp, up-and-around shots. But I find it hard to imagine Manny matching DLH for a whole fight, or breaking him down. DLH will be in a war, but his bombs and armor will be, at this weight, superior, and will prevail by mid-late TKO or decision.

Hoya will come in the bigger, stronger fighter, not to mention a good enough hand speed to catch the ferocoious Pac-Man, who’s will have to counter with speed and that killer warrior spirit. This will end in a knockout for someone, and win or lose, Pac-Man is a couple of wars away from retirement, not due ti age but due to the mileage and pounding (Similar to a car constantly riding on unfixed Connecticut streets they take long to repair, unless you’re from Greenwich lol).

Me myself really agree wiht michael… that this could be history in the making… coz for me… why makes it history is that most people doesn’t even think that this fight could be possible… and that makes it so much exciting to watch… but if i were to ask i do love to win dela hoya.. honestly im a filipino but i like dela hoya to win coz if you were just here in the philippines pacquiao’s head is getting bigger… he even plan to run for senetor here even if filipino knows that he don’t have any idea what he is about to enter… what pacquiao mostly is fame and he lets our politician to use his fame… majority of filipinos love pacquiao as a boxer as our hero not a politician… thats my opinion… just an opinion..

It just shows how clever and buisness wise DLH is, Yeh pacman is a great fighter but way too small for DLH, DLH wears him down by middle rounds only becouse of the weight difference mind! Why not fight Pavlic, becouse he would of embaressed and ko’d DLH, Instead Golden boy promotions have two money spinners in the above fight and Pavlic v hopkins who lets be honest should have retired after losing to Calzaghe. But GBP and DLH show goes on to fight another day and earn more millions. Anyhow DLH to win and Hopkins to test the waters with Pavlic for a DLH final fight with Pavlic after he ko’s the excecutioner by round 7.

Dela Hoya may be the bigger fighter but don’t forget he has to make the weight! (147) so if DLH doesn’t make the weight through training and a good diet, he’ll have a hard time with sweating it out in the last minute. Making that weight in the last minute will take away some of his stamina as well as power at the same time it makes Pacquiao’s punch more effect. I don’t know what the tricks there are to making the lower weight but come fight time they will be within 10 lbs of each other. So weight won’t really be as big a factor as everyone is talking about. We’ll just have to see if the reach advantage and boxing skill of DLH can out class Pacman. Pacman has really improved his boxing skill in his last 4 and 5 fights. I put it at the early rounds advantage to DLH but the later round to Pacman. If Pacman goes beyond the middle rounds he’ll have a chance at a KO although a KO can come at anytime from either man. I think it’s a good match up and not a mismatch. The catch is if DLH buys his (way-in)weight. I read it’s 3 million for every fraction of a pound he is over.
I have to agree with earlier comments. This is a huge mismatch and the most farcical fight I’ve heard about in modern boxing. DelaHoya is doing this purely and simply for the money. If you see them standing side by side, its like David and Goliath, a massive size difference. He talks about legacy etc, if anything this fight will tarnish that legacy. I can only pray that Pacquiao will finish the fight with his health and wellbeing intact. Good luck Mr Pacquiao but you don’t stand a chance.

Delahoya is right in the sense that it will be a global event. Manny has all the support of his people. Delahoya only has the support of the people that dont understand and see the beauty of boxing when fighters are equally matched. The raza sees Delahoya as a bully and hopes the bully gets his butt kicked. Delahoya is a disgrace to latin people in the way that he has to fight a smaller man to make himself look good. Are you kidding me? This fight is an insult to any boxing expert. Unless the fight is fixed (De la Hoya has been in a few of those) Oscar will destroy Manny. Oscar will come in fight night at leat 20 lbs heavier than Manny.

Boxing is such a wonderful sport, it has lived over the years except that it is becoming / or has become under rated against Mixe martial arts these times. I believe that a promotion like the ODH vs MP fight will hype up boxing once and for all. For as long as the figthers themselves and their handlers think that such a fight is possible despite the perceive mismatch, then let the fight begin! Surely, This will be a classic fight that no body has ever thot to happen. I am excited to see how the fight will go, a small man in his prime (a fighter in his own rights) against a giant who was used to be a stubborn fighter. Though, it is utmost hope and prayer that none of them gets seriously hurt along the fight!
Everybody knows ODH is a good boxer, in style, in strategy, but on his previous fight with Forbes, I see that he can’t move like before. If Forbes had stamina like Pacquiao, he can beat ODH. As my observation, ODH is in trouble if he can’t get Pacman in early rounds.. We know Pacman had a good stamina, flexible and strong also.. I think Pacman can beat ODH…
Some says this boxing match is ridiculous but it’s stimulating every boxing enthusiast to witness this unimaginable and unexpected match. So let’s just watch and enjoy the new edition of David and Goliath.

Oscar loves to hook,manny loves to duck then counter..oscar will try the uppercut but will surely be warned for a low blow because of his height and long reach.Oscar’s real and only target is the head which he can do if he dance and made use of his long reach.i say decision for oscar if it goes the distance and KO for manny if he can go inside..
This fight is not a joke! People said it was a joke when Holyfield went up to heavyweight. Then he beat up on good fighters at times thirty pounds more than him! Pac is good. Maybe great. So i think it is a great challenge for him to prove himself in 147. Even if he fails, The boxing world will have respect for him simply for trying.

i agree with Cio, just because Manny is smaller than de le Hoya, it doesn’t mean the latter already won the ring. maybe Hoya is thinking bout money but for Manny, i think fighting Hoya is indeed a dream come true, take it from the point of view of a struggling fighter who in his early years hungered for nothing but easier life and pride by embracing boxing. Manny got the riches already no questions about it but being offered to fight Hoya considered the great boxer of present time? that is something more than checks and contracts can buy. determination drives manny and i think that will add to his already conditioned and disciplined knowledge of boxing. If you want power and endurance to last each round. Pacquiao is the one to favor as the victor. DLH is experienced but not of a fierce fighter as Pac-man. With consistency each shot to DLH has to be accurate and Manny is known for landing shots where they count and when they count.
The old addage in boxing goes “A good big man beats a great little man,” so will this fight go. No one seems to understand that although Pac is a dominant fighter, he is purely 1 dimensional. He jabs, jabs, and lands his straight left. The only time his right hand is a factor is when he fights in close, or is going in for the finish.
De La Hoya, although clearly removed from his prime, is the FAR SUPERIOR boxer. When he throws his jab, it is stiff and accurate. Not to mention, he has withstood punches from, and knocked out fighters far bigger than Pac. Pacman is going to get hurt. BAD!!

For the last 5 years I have the distinct privilege of raking in wins courtesy of our hero, Manny Pacqauio. I have lost only once, in March of 2005 (against Erik Morales). The winnings have been lopsided, needless to say they have been increasing.
The majority of my employees are from Mexico, die hard boxing fans. A lot of bragging rights and bravado. Pacquaio is so popular among my work crew nowadays, they have been betting against their own countrymen!
I’ve always bet even one on one but the fight scheduled on December 6, I’m reluctant to take a bet against Delahoya. I’ve been checking the odds on Las Vega$ and last month, I checked it was something like $ 1.85 bet on Pacqaio to win $ 1; seems like our national pride is the one favored to win by KO.
I’ve been hounded to take bets and I’ve refused to take any. Here’s the sweet deal; I’ve been offerred 4/5 odds. I bet $ 400 and will get $ 500 if Pacquaio wins! There are many more bet propositions like this but 4/5 is the best I’ve seen so far; they want to avenge their loses througout the years.
Should I take the bet? Are there any boxing aficionados out there that could give me an insight? What do you think? KO? What round?

I voted for a Pacquiao win by KO, because that is what I want, but not what I think is going to happen.
Aside from De La Hoya’s negated loss to Felix Sturm, his boxing events are hardly worthy of being a PPV spectacle. He is an incredibly tough and skilled boxer, however his performance is entirely predictable. If you can figure what is in his head before the fight starts, you can feel certain about what he will bring to the ring.
So, if Pacquiao doesn’t win by KO, then De La Hoya will be far too Defensive and entirely ineffective on offense to (rightly) win on the scorecards.
Manny’s got it in the bag. De La Hoya’s had his day in the sun, so it’s finally time for some new blood…
I think I have to agree about manny head butting his opponents often.. Every time he does that, he doesnt care about the point deduction for he will aim for the KO.. which I think is a very dirty strategy.. He purposely weakens his opponents by a head butt causing blood to shed from them and then goes for the KO when they are already too weak.. D-I-R-T-Y.
Anyway, I hope to see a good fight this dec 6.. I think the one who wants to win more will win..
Pac man will win by decision and probably sign to fight for De La Hoyas company in the very near future. De La Hoya cant get into this kid of shape, Pac man will not knock Oscar out but he will out point him and them beat him up after the 8th round… I’m looking for excuses from Oscar to be honest….Typical of his sort, when you cant win fairly, cheat or make up excuses….

I totally agree with Elias Luna (1st person that posted a comment). De La Hoya knows he is not in his prime anymore and he is picking on smaller opponents like Paquiao and Forbes that are great in their division, but have to put in some weight in order to reach De La Hoya’s weight division. He knows he has that huge advantage and therefore, an easy fight for him to win against a great fighter like Manny Paquiao. This is going to be the biggest test for Manny Paquiao, but I hope he kicked De La Hoya’s ass. Shame on you De La Hoya, why didn’t you picked someone like Margarito?
Ok I’ve mulled this thing over and I see many of you have made excellent points. Oscar is gonna be up for this fight and loose a split descision, the only reason it wont be a unanimous Pacman victory is because they dont want to embarrass Oscar to the world like that, I think Manny is gonna be way to fast with too many combinations. Manny will win this fight. I love how these people under estimate Pacquiao. He’s considered as the best pound for pound fighter by ring magazine. De La Hoya was great but now he’s old and slow. I won’t be surprise if Manny whip his ass and De La Hoya retire after the fight. This fight will be remembered as one said.
It’s gonna be a triumph for the Filipino people, but it bothers me that Dela Hoya has the height and reach advantage. Let’s just hope Pacquiao’s heart and determination are bigger than the height and reach combined.

Dela hoya didnt even stand a chance against manny, he barely throw a punch in the last few rounds, and when he did(at round 8), it only showed how hard he was beaten up by manny.
by size, manny looked like a kid compared to delahoya, but from what ive seen in the match, delahoya looked like a little boy fighting a grown up, in skills.

did anyone see this as a possible fixed fight? I’ve seen allot of DLH fights and in this fight he just seems to go 30 percent. Not taking the shots and jabs as usual and just plainly going for a loss. Soft jabs and already faltering at the knees yet not breathing heavy when he had his breaks. Just weird. I truly felt it just didn’t make any sense. he even just handed the comments over to manny as if he knew he would lose and not surprised. Fixed? His wife didn’t even have a worried look like she also expected it.

It’s so sad that one of the greatest fighter on his prime and 10 times world champion at 6 different divs suffered a tremendous defeat on the hand of our very own pacman. I know many of us idolized oscar, even filipinos are also idolized oscar on his prime.
But now, he belongs to the aged boxer who gives us a good memories & happines when we watching them fighting.
I’m also one of the millions watching and cheering once oscar have a fight, but i’m a filipino.

I understand he got pummeled. But for 50 million i think it was worth it to him. Your disregarding some of the obvious I pointed out.
Also its a safe guess that if Manny lost that there will be no “dream matchs” for pac man to fight again. Oscar losing has opened the door for manny to fight other bigger guys and that would mean more money for Gloden Boy productions and also more interests in the boxing sport which has dimmed.
Oscar may have good business sense in having manny win. He retires and gets even more money later than just another no title win.

I was a big fan of DLH even before Pacquiao started making a name for himself. As a Filipino and a Pacquiao follower, I was hurt at how the DLH camp and most of the media trampled on Pacquiao’s ability to win.
Now that it’s over, I quite understand that DLH has to do what he did to hype up the match. He was humble in defeat. Now he is planning his next multi-million dollar project even while on his way to the bank to collect his cool $50M. I have more respect and admiration for the man as ever.
Manny should learn from DLH.

What I am saying is that it just seems far off from the getgo that DLH first round did not match his usual rounds even with Forbes. There shouldn’t be any exhaustion there but there was something odd. Hey man this is just not one guy saying this, were talking other top boxing analysts who also say the same thing.

Well, everyone has his own say about what had happened on Sat. fight night in vegas and even in the future fight nights wether or not it involves the pacman.
But i bet that those who call themselves “boxing experts” and who insenuated something ‘fixed’ about the fight are the same people who bet on ODL to KO pacman mid way of the fight… After Pacman annihilated the brilliant fighters of our time (Barrera 2x, Morales 2x, Marquez 1x, D.Diaz recently) I didn’t see anything odd about what occured in his fight against ODL. You may blame ODL’s faith to the weight he loss, but i am not just convinced that fight is ‘fixed’…In fact, i believe that the reason why ODL didn’t enter the ring at 160 after the weigh-in is because he (like everyonelse) thought that his complete enemy during that fight is speed alone. B-Hop in one of his interviews, stated that MP can never hurt dela hoya.. That is the reason why ODL came up light during the fight, He wanted to cope up MP’s speed, but he just can’t. Also, in the first 5 rounds of the fight, Oscar tried hard to threw combinations but many of them failed to land on the pacman. As pacman retaliated, up and down, ODL just lost the spirit. Clearly, MP hurt dela hoya that’swhy ODL lost the ability to throw more combinations along the way.
