Another Title Shot for Evander Holyfield?
Thursday October 9, 2008
Evander Holyfield, who turns 46 later this month, has been offered yet another shot at the heavyweight title -- this time against WBA beltholder Nikolay Valuev. Or maybe he hasn't. A report that Holyfield would meet Valuev in either Switzerland or Germany in December has been denied by Valuev's manager, Wilfried Sauerland, who says that Holyfield is just one of a number of fighters being considered.
Holyfield's last bout was also a title fight -- a unanimous decision loss to then-WBO champ Sultan Ibragimov last October. If the fight happens, Holyfield will be giving up 10 inches in height and 100 pounds in weight to the 35-year-old Russian Giant. A win by Holyfield - unlikely but not impossible - would make him the oldest boxer to capture the heavyweight title.

I wonder who would want to watch Evander get hit in the head again and again. It is sad that his unusual personal life has so impacted his financial life that he needs to get beated up again and again. He is a marvelous warrior who has made great contributions to the sport and given us all spectacular examples of determination. But enough is enough, and I wonder if Evander should be granted a license to abuse himself still more. It strikes me that any cable company that broadcast such a bout would likely lose viewers.
A proper contender is someone like David Tua, one of the most potent heavyweights around now or ever. But where the heck is he and why isn’t he fighting?
While I agree with the gentleman that Evander is past his prime, BUT he still sells, and that is probably what will count. Valuev is no young Tyson anyhow. Also, a PROPER contender is David Tua??? Give me a break. This bum hasn’t fought anymore than 2-3 times since Lennox beat him 7-8 years ago. Evander would easily be a more proper and formidable.
Hollyfield would not even be able to get close to the much bigger guy and would take jabs and hooks to the head all night long. Overhand rights would scrammble his brain even more–have you heard the guy’s interviews over the last two years? The real issue is that of Hollyfield’s health and the amount of punishment he has absorbed.
As I remember, Tua was in Lewis’s face every round and lost on points, was not hurt. His lack of bug fights apparently is more from no one wants to fight him. With a 49-3 record with 42 knockouts, Tua last fought a year ago or so. At 36 and if in shape, he is a force to be taken seriously.
Imagine that!
If someone can not SPELL the fighters name, he SURE AS -HELL- doesn’t know what is “best” for him instead of the man, himself!
