W. Klitschko Seeks New Opponent

Tuesday October 28, 2008
Heavyweight champ Wladimir Klitschko has a title defense scheduled for Dec. 13 at the SAP Arena in Mannheim, Germany ... he just doesn't have an opponent. Mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin has been forced to withdraw from the fight after tearing a ligament in his left foot when he tripped over a tree root while doing roadwork.

Klitschko is hoping to find a suitable replacement in time to keep the Dec. 13 date. Possibilities include Alexander Dimitrenko and Chris Arreola, either or who would have to pull out of an already scheduled bout to face Klitschko. Other options include former champs Oleg Maskaev and Hasim Rahman. 46-year-old Evander Holyfield is probably sitting by his phone as well.

Povetkin defeated Chris Byrd and Eddie Chambers to earn the title shot but now must get back in line and hope to get on Klitschko's calendar some time in 2009.

If he is in shape and free of the management problems that have hounded him lately, I would still like to see David Tua take on the elder Klitschko. Only 35 years old, Tua has a cement jaw and power in both hands to take out anyone if he can get close. He has been annoyingly inactive, largely because of the management issues he has had. It would be miserable if any of the current stew of unimpressive heavyweights eneded up as another boring opponent.

Donald Wolberg - Name - I see your post once, previously. David Tua -certainly- has been a very-formidable boxer for the past 12 years (does it only “seem” like 12-years??)but, REALLY, just this minute he is “out of the Loop” and if you don’t know that then you haven’t been paying attention. But, Hey-!- You -like- boxing. I -like- boxing…lets put us - together. You contact Tua and -see- what he has -desire- to do -yet- and then I will do the match Charting (I “am an expert reader”)and -YOU & Me- we see -if- We-can-move-him! SOUND like an idea? I’m Serious!
-smile- but…”Yes”, get in touch with me!~

Of course Tua is not in most of the loops, but he is in one top ten still. But of all the guys out there, he is the one to beat. Talk about Hollyfield again is bad for boxing and worse for Hollyfield’s health. I always liked Rahman, but he has taken too much punishment and is way off his peak years. I know Tua has had management issues, and had a hard time getting fights–he has one of the best knockout ratios of anyone. I tried to get to his website, but don’t know if that is operating any more. If Tua was in shape, we would see a classic match and great fights are all about style. Klitschko is not as fast or classy as Lennox Lewis and can’t hit as hard. He would use the jab to try to keep Tua off, but Tua would get in and do good work. There really is no one of Tua’s class out there right now.
