De La Hoya-Pacquiao: Round-by-Round

Sunday December 7, 2008
Pre-Fight: As expected, undercard was awful. Main event should get underway around 11:15pm ET. Referee is Tony Weeks.

Round One: Oscar De La Hoya's four-inch height advantage is very evident. Manny Pacquiao's quickness - both with his hands and his feet - seems to bother Oscar. Pacquiao 10-9.

Round Two: Pacquiao looks spectacular while De La Hoya looks very ordinary. Manny can't miss with his straight lead right as Oscar's head remains a stationary target. De La Hoya is not busy enough. Pacquiao 10-9.

Round Three: Pacquiao continues to dominate. De La Hoya's face is reddening and his punches lack any snap. Still early but Oscar may need a knockout to win. Pacquiao 10-9.

Round Four: Oscar comes out aggressively but the rest of the round is all Pacquiao. De La Hoya simply can't handle Manny's speed and - so far - has made no adjustments. De La Hoya looks a bit discouraged and it's looking like a KO may be his only chance to win. Lots of Pacquiao fans in the crowd. Pacquiao 10-9.

Round Five: Oscar's best round of the fight so far ... and he still didn't win it. Either De La Hoya is flat or Pacquiao is better than ever. Maybe both. Swelling under Oscar's right eye. Pacquiao 10-9.

Round Six: De La Hoya used to have a great jab and a great left hook. Where did they go? Oscar is tougher than he's given credit for but he's never taken a one-sided beating like this. Not by Trinidad. Not by Mosley. Not by Hopkins. Not by Mayweather. Pacquaio shows no signs of slowing down or getting reckless - he's fighting a technically perfect fight. Pacquiao 10-9.

Round Seven: The worst round of Oscar's career. Pacquaio hits him relentlessly. De La Hoya was never close to getting knocked down yet referee Tony Weeks looks tempted to stop the fight. After the round, Oscar's corner tells him he has to throw punches or they'll throw in the towel. Oscar's left eye is rapidly closing. End appears near. Pacquiao 10-8.

Round Eight: De La Hoya has too much pride to quit but he's no longer competitive and he's taking a beating. Doesn't appear he even has the proverbial 'puncher's chance' because he's not throwing any punches with bad intentions. It's only a matter of time before the referee, the doctor or Oscar's corner stops the fight. Pacquiao 10-9.

It's over! De La Hoya's corner convinces him not to come out for the ninth round. It's the right decision as the next twelve minutes were only going to get worse.

Punch Stats: Total Punches: De La Hoya - 83 of 402 (21%); Pacquiao - 224 of 585 (38%). Total Power Punches: De La Hoya - 51 of 164 (31%); Pacquiao - 195 of 333 (59%).

Scoring: After eight one-sided rounds, all three judges had Pacquiao way ahead in the fight: 80-71, 80-71 and 79-72.

Post-Fight: De La Hoya, as always, was all class. He stopped short of announcing his retirement but sounded like he's leaning that way. To his credit, he offered no excuses and had nothing but praise for Pacquiao.

Pacquiao - completely unmarked - says his preparation was all based on speed and he knew in the first round that he was too fast for De La Hoya. Manny wouldn't say who he wants to fight next but moving down to 140 to face Ricky Hatton makes sense. The bigger question may be whether Pacquiao's spectacular win is enough to lure Floyd Mayweather out of 'retirement' for one more huge payday.

if you think this fight was on the up and up your f****n stupid.this was not delahoya this was don king jr in that ring.i never thought delahoya would ever join that terrible side of boxing.if you know delahoya’s work ethic you know he would never quit, and if you don’t have the guts to call it like it is get the f**k out of analyzing boxing cause that makes you a fake to.

fight was totally worth it. it was very entertaining to watch the golden boy get a massive beatdown. both fighters are first class.

I’m glad to see that de la hoya was very humble & praising in his post fight comments, and not making up any stupid excuses for his loss.

pacquiao’s energy in his fights is just completely astonishing. not once did he look like he was tiring. always on point. always on guard. one of the best technical & strategical fights I’ve ever seen, in my honest opinion

manny pacquiao is my effin hero!!

(5) ed says:

not to take away anything from pacquiao, i totally agree with your anallization on his performance.with delahoya’s performance pacquiao didn’t have to try very hard cause delahoya was giving him every opportunity to win the fight.delahoya threw half jabs, no power punches that even looked like they wanted to do any damage, and he didn’t throw any signature left hooks.i would have rather let my wife drag me to another showing of twilight.at least there i expect them to act.

(6) Joe says:

fight looked like a fake! I hate de la hoya but hes a MUCH better boxer then what he showed. Looked like he held everything in, didnt try …. PERIOD. Not taking anything away from manny (still think he may have won) but it was an obvious fake fight!

(7) Jhina says:

It’s a real fight, how would Dela Hoya let someone bet him up like that, he waited to corner Pacquaio like he always do but Pacquiao knows his style because his trainor taught him how Dela Hoya fights and he never let that to happen. He’s always trying to stay in the middle of the ring to avoid being cornered and kill by Dela Hoya’s deadly left punch. Plus Pacquaio is faster and younger and has deadly left fist too. He got his match this time.

(8) Daboy says:

The Dream Match is Over… Both of them are a great warriors… they love boxing… this is a real fight… a very sportsmanship and professional fighters… they both respect themselves… a real and great fighters… a hero of their country… and still a hero… to become a winner or to loose in this game… they are still a hero of boxing… they both deserve to be respected… Let’s all proud for Pacquiao and Dela Hoya… They are both winners…

(9) Alex Diamante says:

What the pack happened to you, Oscar!?
Never in my wildest dream or nightmare that the Pacman would do this to you!

Pac said somethin’ like: This is nothing personal. I’m just doing my job.

Are you going to say: This is not personal… purely business.?????????
Nooooo. I hope not.

What a way to go!!!

But still, The Golden Boy lives forever!

delahoya was in the ring strictly for the $$$$. it’s a damn shame that the public gets led like sheep into paying big bucks for a joke of a fight like this. i knew delahoya could never beat this guy. talk about a set-up. like the other guy said….i’m glad i didn’t pay $$ for this joke

(11) jaime chavez says:

I thought at first Oscar had the advantage. But than I remembered that Oscar’s right against Pac’s left are not in the same league. Than I remembered fights with big size differences. (arguell-Pryor. Duran-Barkley, Duran-Moore. Tyson of course. etc. Hunger? Another factor.
Also. Manny has boxed great technical fighters. Marquez, Morales, Barrera 7 times total. Than I saw the rematch of De la hoya- Chavez. Chavez as slow as he is, hit De la hoya with right leads. Pacman is at the top of his game. Pacman time.

i’m filipina and i’m very proud of manny’s victory. however, i can’t hardly believe that dela hoya did not throw punches since 1st round. i knew dela hoya as one of a great boxer. he’s one of the best counter-puncher and aggressive boxer as well. i don’t know what happen. i hope that the fight is “fixed” and not for money.

(15) Mark says:

Everytime Manny wins you always say that the fight was fake and the opponents gave the fights to Manny. What a bunch of hipocrites. Try punching while being hit in the face with left hooks and you will know why Oscar didn’t punch that much.

do you think that this is the DREAM MATCH???

The DREAM MATCH must be

PACQUIAO and MAYWEATHER!!!

(17) Ken Pereira says:

It is evident what has become more important to Oscurs and it’s not his pride, it’s his bank account. This loss is leading the Golden Boy down a super golden path, a Golden Boy Production of Pacquiao vs Mayweather. Boy do I miss the marvelous days when a man’s reputation in the ring was far more important then what was in his wallet. I don’t care what they say Marvin beat Suger Ray!

Manny Pacquiao won for he was faster than Oscar, but Manny has not fought with the Russians yet. He needs a fighter who is as fast as he is and even faster than we can enjoy the fight!

(20) thaching says:

those who think that this fight is a fake should use their brain and common sense.

de la hoya doesnt punch because evrytime he punches, it gives manny the opening to hit him. pacquiao is so fast, and everytime oscar strecthes his arms to punch,
effective punches from pacman coming back tripple.
oscar is a veteran fighter, he knows he has to punch, but he become defenseless evrytime he punch, thats why he doesnt punch.
he just wait a one big blow to KO pacman to win

I FEEL OSCAR LET US DOWN!! HE QUIT!! I FEEL HE SHOULD HAVE GONE ALL TWELVE ROUNDS!! CHAVEZ NEVER QUIT AND THAT WAS OSCAR IDOL!! MYSELF I WANTED OSCAR TO WIN AND BRING BACK TO HIS PEOPLE!! BUT THE BEST MAN WON!! BUT I WILL ALWAYS BE A OSCAR FAN!!

December 15, 2008 at 11:36 pm
(23) Tony Cook says:

Oscar is the best businessman in boxing, but has not been a top fighter for years. These made-for-TV dream matches are good for money into his pocket, but I don’t think they are good for boxing. He didn’t belong in the ring with a machete like Pacman, and hasn’t for years. He can’t beat Mosley, who Pacman would eat up. I just do not get why he gets the $20 mil purses when he doesn’t have a right hand and has lost 4 of his last seven fights in the last 5 years and was handed one of the three wins despite being beaten up by Sturm. Anyone who saw that fight knows De la Hoya lost it by two points.
Quit, Oscar, you’re embarassing yourself. You were good, but that was before this century.
Pacman-Hatton, and then Pacman-Mayweather. Those won’t be shutouts.

obviously, the fight for me was amazing, sensational, classical, historical, legendary and all other positive adjectives that you can describe…but what happened in that fight was unexpected for me…i expected a more explosive and thrilling fight from both fighters(especially dela hoya)…i was upset with dela hoya’s performance…he was sloppy and freaky…he was demolished and strangled that night…but with pacman, he was great and and obviously superior…he stained the very clean legacy of dela hoya…this is the the time of pacman’s dynasty…pacman vs hatton, let’s get it on, it’s got to be in may…pacman vs mayweather, let’s for its approval…pacman vs valero, again let’s pray for this, im sure this will an explosive one…

You guys are stupid if you think this was a real fight! Obviously no one commenting is a boxer. You can visibly see oscar holding his punches and allowing pac to hit him! De la hoya said several months ago that his goal was to be a billion air! This obviously brought him closer to that! What a sell out for money. The new Don King is De la hoya

#29…u r d 1 s2pid…for ur info whether dela hoya lost or win that fight he wil get d sme money…he will stl b a millionaire whatever hapns…moreover if you really idolized dela hoya, y are you thinking that he chose money more than he’s legacy and pride…dela hoya is not like that…he was just really overpowered by pacman that night…

open your mind people,a fixed game is always seem to be a good fight avoiding people to suspect it,if that is fixed do you think dlh will not get at least 2rnd and allows pacman to punish him that much, and surrender his pride and legacy in a worst fight. think again my friend.

(32) Ferny says:

You mexicans will make up any excuse to defend yo’ boy de la hoya. Either way Manny “mexecutioner pacman” Pacquiao does it again.
