As Mosley won round after round it seemed as if he might be on his way to winning a unanimous decision. Becoming the first man to KO Margarito still seemed highly improbable. Then, late in the eighth round, Margarito went down from an accumulation of punches. He beat the count as the bell sounded to end the round but the minute between rounds was not nearly enough time for Margarito to recover. Mosley came out in the ninth to end the fight and it took just 43 seconds as he landed 21 punches to zero for Margarito. The barrage prompted Margarito’s corner to throw in the towel just as referee Raul Caiz jumped in to stop the bout as the beaten Margarito slumped to the canvas.
Official Sccoring: The heavily favored Margarito didn’t win a single round on one judge’s scorecard, won one on another and two on the third (80-71, 79-72 and 78-73).
Punch Stats: Mosley landed 178 of 507 punches (35%). Margarito landed 108 of 485 (22%).
Both fighters reportedly earned $2.4 million. With the win, Mosley - who has never ducked a challenge - is positioned for another big payday and there is no bigger challenge in the welterweight division than 6' 1" Paul Williams . . .

Margarito is a cheater. If I am right that substance they discovered in Margarito’s boxing gloves is called “Plaster Of Paris”. It is a powdery substance you can buy from hardware stores (also known as escayola powder). It is dry white powder and when it gets wet and dried will harden like brick. They use this in molding mannequins and statues (or tiny ornaments). Ever got hit by a piece of brick?
To much sugar can make you feel sick and Margarito certainly eat to much. Mosely’s sugar cane jab was laced with arsenic, his right was pure poison and his defense was as slippery as melted chocolate. I picked Shane to win on points as long as his career didn,t catch up on him. It seems that Margaritos style of fighting has diminished his ability to take sustained punishment. Molesy booed into the ring in part from the substance controversy. Margarito cheered in, the fans unaware of the(wrap)he is facing. Margarito went out for the 9th like a true champion knowing he was about to be k.od. A clinical cynical systematic annihilation from a superb Sugar Shane. Antonios past victories will always be viewed with sceptisism and that is a tragedy that will probably prevent any immediate consideration for Hall of fame status. Ah well every action has a reaction. Mike
WHAT A FIGHT I LOVE MOSELY!! HE REALLY LOOKED GREAT. MARGARITO IS GREAT ALSO BUT DIDNT SHOW ME NOTHING LAST NIGHT.
Rita from Stockton has it right; Shane, we love you. What a fight; what a fighter. He was careful, precise, on target the entire match–maybe, just maybe Antonio had one round. The match to end all matches would be for Mayweather to come out of retirement for a match with Shane. It would be a blockbuster and a great fight. Lots of credit to Shane’s corner of course, but Mosely was picture perfect. The discovery of a foreign substance in Margarito’s wraps is very troubling. It does make one wonder about the Cotto fight. Certainly some action should be taken for the violation.
Would anyone happen to know where I can find the pay for all the fighters on this card?
You have to wonder if Plaster of Paris in the gloves is how Margarito beat Cotto.
good to see mosely back to his best, margarito had no answer for sugars speed, power and sheer determination,I won a well earned six pack from the old man who reckoned margarito was the man to beat in his division oh well dad back to the drawing board champ!! Bring on mayweather and pac man, the fight im sure every true boxing enthusiast wants to see
Cotto fought like Mosely would of and Mosely fought like Cotto should of…and plaster of paris would of been a moot point because Maragito barely connected against Sugar Cane Shane…i say cane because he beat him like a tourist doing graffiti in Thailand…Ouch!!! Shane has placed himself back into the top 10 actually top 5 and a mega fight against Clottey Judah rematch with Cotto or a MEGA fight deal against PAQ man……hmmmm what’s a p4p to do?
I compared the Margarito Cotto FIght side by side with the Margarito Mosley fight side by side round for round. Margarito is using synthetic hormones or designer steroids of some kind and he through the fight with Mosley. Mosley cant hit hatder than Cotto and didnt hit Margarito with nearly as many clean shots as Cotto hit him with. This fight was a complete unbeliveable FRAUD!!!!!!!!!
Dear Lito I respect your point of view. I think if Margarito was going to throw the fight he wouldn’t have taken such a sustained beating. I think the main difference between Mosely and Cotto was Margarito could’t land shots against Shane and the ones he did land had no where near the affect. Makes you wonder about the “wrap” I believe that Cotto was cheated out of his unbeaten record and that the fight should be declared “no contest” If a fighter chooses to cheat then his previous contests will be viewed with suspision. How about us fans putting pressure on the governing bodies to reinstate Cotto to unbeaten? Sincerely Mike
First, I wonder why the Website host didn’t mention the illegal wrap. Second, I agree strongly that the Cotto fight should be officially called No Contest. Arguello was among the victims of plaster-gloved opponents. As was a promising fighter from Kentucky or Tennessee, whose career and health were ruined by this crooked practice. His name slips me now. Panama Lewis the the trainer who specialized in turning his fighters’ gloves into deadly weapons. Margarito lost in part because he was like an opponent of Superman who got his kryptonite removed. He knew he had lost his secret weapon. All he had left was his strong chin.
Good on you John W. Is there anyone else out there who will lend their weight to a No Contest verdict for the Cotto v Margarito bout Mike Wicks
Innocent untill proven guilty. Suppose not many of you have heard that phrase befroe. Anyone remember Tito?
