IOC to Decide on Women's Boxing in Olympics

By , About.com GuideApril 1, 2009

Follow me on:

There 26 Summer Olympic sports federations preparing for the 2012 London Games. What is the only sport out of those 26 without female participants? Boxing.

That could change in August when the International Olympic Committee will make a "recommendation" on a proposal from the International Amateur Boxing Association to include women's boxing. Women's boxing was not included in the 2008 Beijing Olympics because the IOC did not consider it to be a "global" sport.

Has the international acceptance and popularity of women's boxing really grown in the past four years? While women's boxing would certainly benefit from inclusion as an Olympic sport, it still seems like no better than a 50/50 bet that the IOC will now deem it to be "global".

womens boxing should be given a chance at olympic level, after all they claim to be equal to men.ive found womens boxing entertaining to the point you can sit back and enjoy the fights in a more light hearted way.unlike a pro mens bout where you are tensed up, in anticipation at “your guys” outcome, i see womens boxing as great prelim entertainment, and they!re getting better!!

As far as global goes, Womens boxing is very popular all over the world. Thailand, Germany, Switzerland, Poland, The Netherlands all seem to be female boxing “hot spots”.
BUT it doesnt seem like MMA is stealing some of that thunder.
