Trinidad-Hopkins II? Why?

By , About.com Guide   April 24, 2009

Follow me on:

Felix Trinidad, inactive for over a year and winless since 2004, is retired, right? Guess again. The former champ has been meeting with promoter Don King about coming back (again) and he's got his sights set on a rematch with Bernard Hopkins. Bad idea. Amazingly, Trinidad is still only 36 ... but it's an old 36. At 28, was stopped by Hopkins in the 12th round of a one-sided fight. At 32, he lost a one-sided decision to Winky Wright. At 35, Tito came back after nearly three years out of the ring and dropped a one-sided decision to Roy Jones Jr..

If Trinidad is serious about coming back, he should return with a tune up fight (or three) to see if he can regain any semblance of the great fighter who dominated at 147, 154 and 160 from 1993 to 2001. Someone along the lines of a John Duddy or a Peter Manfredo Jr. would likely provide the right level of competition. If Trinidad's first fight back is against Hopkins, then he's clearly not serious about winning - he's simply interested in a payday and isn't confident he would look good enough in a tune up to warrant a big money bout. If that's the case, then Tito might as well ask his fans to send him some cash rather than provide them with an opportunity to see him get beat up again.

And what purpose does a Trinidad rematch serve for Bernard Hopkins ... other than an easy payday? Even at 44, Hopkins remains a top ten pound-for-pound fighter. He's 3-1 over the past three years with dominating wins over Antonio Tarver, Winky Wright and Kelly Pavlik and a close decision loss to Joe Calzaghe. Hopkins should be looking for a fight with undefeated light heavyweight champ Chad Dawson. And if Hopkins insists on fighting an unnecessary rematch, he still shouldn't fight Felix Trinidad. He (and boxing fans) would be better off if he tried to even his score with 40-year-old Roy Jones Jr..

What do you think? Should Trinidad attempt another comeback? If so, who should Tito fight? And, with nothing left to prove, who should Hopkins fight next?

I’m sure I’m in a VAST minority here, but I’ve always felt that Trinidad and Hopkins have both been highly overrated their entire careers.
Tito never impressed me – ever. And I’ve always thought Hopkins was a dirty fighter and a whiner to boot.
Talk about a bore-fest if those two get together. I hope it doesn’t happen.

tito is awesome or at least was, i think he still has the ability to box and become a champion again but he needs to actually train, and train hard (plus like 2-3 tune ups). When he lost to hopkins he was coming up and alot smaller than hopkins as was delahoya and most recently kelly pavlik. Hopkins has beaten allot of smaller fighters in his career great fighter and champion though, dirty as f*k and his defensive style is boring. But alas he is growing old, infact if hopkins fought pavlik back in the late 90’s early 2000’s he would have knocked him out (i belive tito still could knock out pavlik as he has the perfect style that tito fed off of for years). I would like to see this fight but once again tito needs to bring it all to the table and prove he still belongs in boxing. i could rant and rave about the pros and cons of this fight and these two boxers but lucky for you i wont.
PEACE.

Tito was a great fighter. The only way tito can beat bernard is if he learns a different style of boxing. and could take years he doesnt have..
