Poll: Hatton vs. Pacquiao. Who Will Win?

By , About.com GuideApril 29, 2009

Follow me on:

Given the one-sided beating Manny Pacquiao administered to Oscar De La Hoya in December, many boxing 'experts' predict Pac Man will simply steamroll Ricky Hatton in this Saturday's pay-per-view megabout in Las Vegas. Not so fast. While Pacquiao fully deserves to be favored by oddsmakers (-250/+200), there's no reason to believe that this will be anything other than a competitive - and highly entertaining - bout.

Hatton is a strong, natural light welterweight who - at 30 and under the tutelage of Floyd Mayweather Sr. - is in his athletic prime. The Hitman has only lost once and that was by tenth round TKO to pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2007. He has since bounced back with solid wins over Juan Lazcano and Pauli Malignaggi.

Pacquiao - also 30 - began his professional career at 106 pounds (he was just one month past his 16th birthday at the time!) but has grown into a full-fledged junior welterweight. It's debatable whether or not De La Hoya was washed-up when he quit after absorbing eight rounds of punishment from Pacquiao. What is not debatable, however, is that Pacquiao looked awesome.

Prediction: Hatton is strong and fast and has his moments but Pacquaio is just a little stronger and a little faster. Pacquiao by decision or possibly a late TKO

Who do you think will win? Hatton or Pacquiao? Vote in our poll.

This certainly shapes up to be a heck of a fight, but sadly on PPV, when boxing needs a great fight open to all when it happens. Hatton is the underdog, largely because of the collapse of Oscar, a collapse that actually happened a long time ago, before his last fight. Hatton is determined, tough, and really in the best shape of his life. He is stronger, I think, and has energy that does not stop. Manny is a great, great fighter, but seems to have slacked off in his dedication (or hunger), and should be vulnerable to pressure in the mid and later rounds. I was concerned in the HBO hype programs for the fight that showed Manny’s trainers watching Hatton tapes while Manny was off with his wife at the airport or somewhere. The scene with Hatton doing the running in the rough Nevada hills, was a stark contrast, reminding me of Rocky I. I would look for a stoppage by Hatton over Manny in Round 9 or so. No matter who wins, this may be the fight of the year.

Most EXPERTS claimed Oscar was too big for Manny. Oscar was too OLD and Shot for Manny as Freddie Roach said. Now apply all the EXPERTS reasons to Ricky and it all works. Ricky is the bigger, stronger fighter with a good work rate and a bit heavier punch. Ricky by majority decision, maybe 11th or 12th round knock-out. Sorry kids that’s the way of it.

Will be a great fight. Manny will start fast and should win the first few rounds. Hatton will look to get inside and pound to the body. The way he fought against Malignaggi tells me he will get inside and quite easily. By the 5th the fight will change. Manny will slow to the constant pressure and body attack of Hatton who will have the heavier hands. I would expect a stoppage to hatton around 9 or 10. Possibly even a KO body shot. Manny has been stopped twice and both were body shots. The bigger man will prevail.

PACMAN will win in the 4th round by KO. Hatton is another Dela Hoya who was more hype than reality.

this will be an amazing fight,i think manny will be aggressive for the first 4 rounds, manny will attack hatton by jabbing, and continue to jab until left hook of manny takes place, hatton knock out in 7th or 8th round

I think Pacquio is tking Freddie Roache’s antiparknson medication Dopamine, which makes you more focused, quicker and stronger. I wish someone would measure his Dopamine level prior to the fight; or even afetr.

Let’s sing the songs “Moon River” and “It’s impossible” to counter the Hitman’s “Blue Moon.” It’s unthinkable that the Pacman is losing on May 2nd.

The PacMan is better than Roberto Duran at his prime. No fighter 147 lbs or lower in weight can beat this boxer. Not for the next three years at least. He is simply too quick and hits too hard. Hatton never saw the shots that took him down. However, the PacMan will lose his speed as he ages – then, he can be beaten.

Hi Mr. Andrew, why is it that the no. 1 p4p in your list is Floyd Jr. not Pacquiao. Still not recognize Pacquiao as a great boxer of all time or even see during Hatton fight or may I say you’re a blind man and praised Floyd or a fanatic to him.
