Berto, Cintron Win Unanimous Decisions

Sunday May 31, 2009
Undefeated Andre Berto (25-0) retained his WBC welterweight title with a one-sided unanimous decision over rugged IBF junior welterweight champ Juan Urango (21-2-1). Berto used his tremendous advantage in speed to win round after round with relative ease. There were no cuts and no knock downs and no surprises. Fights rarely go exactly as expected. This one did.

Punch Stats: Total Punches: Berto - 243 of 655 (37%); Urango - 180 of 742 (24%). Power Punches: Berto - 174 of 262 (66%); Urango - 171 of 515 (33%).

Official scoring: 118-110, 118-110 and 117-111 for Berto.

Next: In terms of talent, Berto is an elite welterweight. In terms of earning power, he's not quite there yet. Berto needs to secure a fight with Shane Mosley, Miguel Cotto, Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao to be recognized - and paid - as one of the division's best. Urango will move back down to 140 to defend his IBF belt.

In the co-feature, former welterweight champ Kermit Cintron (31-2-1) scored a mild upset over previously unbeaten 154-pound contender Alfredo Angulo (15-1). Cintron was sharper and more active throughout as the normally dynamic Angulo appeared somewhat sluggish and was never able to impose his will on Cintron.

Punch Stats: Total Punches: Cintron - 316 of 1094 (29%); Angulo - 277 of 957 (29%).

Official scoring: 116-112 for Cintron on all three cards.

Next: This was a big win for Cintron - still only 29 - as he didn't look particularly good in his most recent outing, a clear loss to Sergio Martinez in February that was nevertheless scored a controversial draw. The win may get him a rematch with Martinez. The loss is clearly a setback for the 26-year-old Angulo, who was seen as rising star heading into this bout.

Cintron was a beast in this fight. He dominated Angulo in every single aspect of boxing. He put on a clinic. I was disappointed to hear Gary Shaw “claim” Angulo had been ill for days and not up to full speed. I know for a fact that was not the case. I was in Hollywood and personally saw Angulo walking with his “pack” out on the boardwalk/shopping area near the Hard Rock the night before the fight. He was smiling, laughing and enjoying a large ice cream treat. He certainly wasn’t ill then. I think the “sickness” happened after he realized that Cintron was simply better in every single way!
