David Haye Pulls Out of Klitschko Fight!

By , About.com GuideJune 3, 2009

Follow me on:

Just minutes ago, it was announced that the June 20 heavyweight title fight between Wladimir Klitschko and David Haye will not go on as scheduled due to an undisclosed back injury suffered by Haye. The injury will reportedly keep Haye sidelined for at least six to eight weeks.

Haye's trashtalking created interest in the fight, so it will likely be rescheduled at a later date. However, over 40,000 tickets have already been sold (at a 60,000 seat soccer stadium in Gelsenkirchen, Germany), so Klitschko may try to quickly line up a replacement opponent to save the current date. One option could be WBA champion Nikolay Valuev, who had his May 30 rematch with Ruslan Chagaev cancelled after Chagaev failed a pre-fight blood test. Klitschko-Valuev makes sense and would seem to entirely doable as both big men are presumably already in shape. However, this is the heavyweight division so the odds of Klitschko-Valuev happening on June 20 are slim.

We'll update this story as more information becomes available.
