Juan Diaz-Malignaggi Ends in Controversy

By , About.com GuideAugust 23, 2009

Follow me on:

Former champs Juan Diaz and Paulie Malignaggi both executed their game plans in an entertaining 12-round junior welterweight bout. In the end, the only thing that separated the two fighters was the location of the bout.

Find out who won, what was controversial about the decision and why the loser's post-fight rant was entirely justified.

The judge who scored this fight 118-110 should be banned from ever judging again. A score like that for a fight like this is obviously biased.

I wish boxing would implement some sort of system which ensures the integrity of the scoring to eliminate “home town” decisions like this. It was blatantly obvious.

Judges whose scoring is consistently “out of whack” with the other scores for a fight should be subject to scrutiny and have their licenses reconsidered and possibly revoked.

Malignaggi didn’t do himself any favors by carrying on like he did after the fight, but HE WAS RIGHT.

I agree that kind of scoring just hurts boxing and frankly why shouldn’t Malignaggi express his frustration, its his living this is impacting and its insulting to fight fans.

Sure the judges got it wrong. But it wasn’t the decision we’ve seen. Paulie should use this as a motovation. Diaz should on the otherhand go back to the drawing board and rebuild his career. As it is, he seems to lack the desire and motivation to reach the level he was once at. He is still a kid but fights like a fighter that is at the end of his career.
