The September 19 bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Juan Manuel Marquez is rapidly approaching.
Both fighters are future Hall of Famers ... but who has the edge in this particular match-up? At 32, Mayweather - who has been out of the ring nearly two years - has selected a top five pound-for-pound fighter for his comeback. A less confident fighter may have chosen the more conventional route of shaking off any ring rust against a hand-picked opponent in a tune-up bout.
At 36, Marquez has 55 pro fights under his belt but has yet to show any evidence of being past his prime. His bigger issues are moving up nearly ten pounds from lightweight to 144 and giving up five inches in reach to the naturally larger Mayweather.

Not much interest or commentary in this one it seems but I’ll chime in with my quick 2 cents worth.
At a time where everyone seems to be waiting the outcome of this bout and the upcoming Pac-man fight with the hope for a mega bout forthcoming between the two, this contest seems lacklustre at best. We all know that Floyd is an athletic epitome with crazy skills but folks, he could be in for a surprise with all of his latest woes. Brushes with the law and the alleged “cracked rib” from sparring as it were. Marquez may be small but he’s crafty and strong with a good chin. Not my favorite boxer but he could be the first catch Mayweather at a time where his head isn’t completely in the game. Prior to Floyd’s short-lived retirement a few years ago this fight would have been a defining mismatch with Floyd winning a clear cut decision. If Marquez is hungry and can feed off the frenzy of negative media spinning out of control…he might be able to shock the world with an early TKO. But should it go beyond 8 or 9 rds. Floyd may steal the victory as he seems to improve as fights go on.
In my opinion, this fight will be just “okay” and I won’t go out of my way to pay to watch it.
Floyd vs. Pac-man will be a much better bout with so many of us on the Manny bandwagon and the big purse, but. . . . .
“Mosely vs. Mayweather” would be the defining bout for Boxing, the fans, the big payday and for both fighters in a multitude of ways, especially for Shane who’s earned and clearly deserves the contention. Plus Shane is back to his true form and weight that he was dominant in. This is a match made for pugilistic heaven.
You don’t have to ask, but my prediction for the record – Sugar Shane Mosely scores a stunning KO putting PBF into permanent convolescence.
Sorry all you Floyd fans, I’ve always admired his skills but in the same sense just wanna see him get whooped soundly and beat down like a mouthy chump ONE time before he winds up a washed-up has-been doing time in some prison, and I think that Shane is the guy to hand it to him without a doubt. Trust me…this match will put the Mega in MegaFight! Assuming that the Sugar Shane who beat Margarito shows up on that night. If so, lights out Floyd.
Mayweather has many advantages over JMM. I see Floyd winning by KO.

I have to say that Phlogger says it the way I see it. PBF would never aggree to fight Mosley, he has already made it clear that he won’t. The way I see it , Mosley should have the big fight on his table, he earned it. One thing that I wish is that they would do away with is fighting at catch weights, we have weight classes for a reason!! At this point all I can say is GO Manny and GO Marquez, I would like both fighters to win their fights and meet in the ring again.
I agree with phlogger. My heart is with Marquez (or anyone else who fights pbf). My head is with Mayweather.
Despite wanting to see pbf take a beating, I think he is too fast and too slick for Marquez.
Please – someone needs to step up and put Mayweather OUT COLD! Problem is pbf is too much of a punk to ever even consider fighting anyone who could actually do that (like Moseley).
Marquez’s only chance is a lucky hard right if/when pbf tries to get “cutesy” and gets a little sloppy. Chances are, that won’t happen.
Oh well. This will probably be a yawner and you’ll likely see pbf on his bike most of the time. Boooooring.

Mayweather is a great boxer. He has all da weapons 2 win dis fight. But i like Marquez in dis 1. Marquez is a great fighter himself, and has great punches, and can take hard 1s at dat. He is also a slugger, and can out punch his opponents. But pretty boy duz have great defence, and is very smooth. If JMM cant beat Mayweather 2 da punch, Pretty boy will win dis fight, but if JMM can slug early and land pretty, he can take dis win back home 2 MEXICO. I also cant wait 2 c Cotto vs Pacquiao, hope Cotto win dat 1!
I won’t be surprise if Marquez win this fight, I mean in boxing anything could happen,Mayweather coming out of almost two years layoff and would be 33 next year, just remember Douglas beaten Tyson, Toney ko Nunn, Foreman stop Moorer in the 10th round and Benn stop McClellan.There was a time when Roy Jones and Riddick Bowe was unbeatable look at them now,look what happen to Sugar Ray Leonard comming out of retirement so many time he got his ass whip in his last two fight Norris and Camacho.I like to see Mayweather fight only to see him get his ass whip I want to see Mayweather fight the best , if he win I wish he would fight pacman.
I agree with Dean. I admire JMM, and want him to win. PMJ is a punk!! But, I think PMJ will prevail on decision due to the following facts.
1) Both fighters are counter punchers. But, PMJ is a bit faster and naturally bigger. Let’s just hope that it won’t turn too strategic and boring fight..
2) Though PMJ is coming out of retirement, he is NOT old. He still got a lot of left in the tank considering his fighting style. Do not compare him with Mike Tyson coming back after a few years in jail. Mike Tyson was a brawler, not as slick and strategic as PMJ. PMJ knows his rythm and adapts different styles to his opponents. He knocked Ricky Hatton when he “felt” that he could do it. He methodically and slowly broke down De La Hoya because he “know” how to do it.
I am not saying that JMM has no chance to win. But, he really got to bring the fight to PMJ, and catch PMJ by surprise. Don’t give PMJ time to think. JMM would make a mistake if he only tries to outbox PMJ. I hope JMM win, but I also want to see Pacman VS. PMJ. If JMM happens to win (though doubtful), Pacman VS. PMJ is going to have to wait quite a while.. That would have sucked too..
Rest is good for the body. Mayweather wins a clear decision. Although he’s been off for almost two years – he’s still in his prime, greasey quick, strong, and never gets tired. That being said… I hope Marquez knocks him out! In the most recent 24/7’s on HBO, Floyd has been more likeable than before… but he surrounds himself with thugs. Boxing does not need any more convicts. Marquez is SOLID, skilled, has a great chin and heart… but he doesn’t have the speed to beat Mayweather.
Who does have the combo of speed, endurance, and punching power to beat Floyd? Mosley, Cotto, Pacman???? I think father time is the only opponent out there right now that shuts Floyd’s big mouth eventually.

i hope juan can pull it off. at least rock floyd a few times. but floyd will dance around for 12 rounds and juan will get frustrated and drained(mentally) by the 6th round. i expect juan to be faster for this fight, but not mayweather fast. it will take a fighter with mayweathers speed and the balls of gatti to bring down the “love of his own farts” floyd…yep, manny paquiao should do the trick.

Mayweather is the favorite to be sure, but it seems apparent that he is fighting because he has to fight, not because he wants to fight. He need the payday because he seems to have not managed his money well compounded by owing the IRS lots and lots of green. I recall Joe Louis had much the same problem and did not do well, ending up wrestling and then greeting gamblers at casinos. Willie Nelso had the same problem but all old Willie had to do was sing, and some of his friends even had a concert for him. Floyd talks a lot, doesn’t sing although he has been doing some lame TV commercials for walk around money I guess, and so far, no friends have come forward to do a concert for him. He may not have many friends, and even those to figure he will win over Marquez, really hope he loses.
Marquez is the essential warrior. He wins and he loses, and he has the determination and heart to keep coming. He is smaller in size, but much bigger in heart, and if he had tax problems, one senses he would have friends there to help. Of course, he does not seem to have tax issues, is a family man, and may just fool everyone with slashing shots that catch Mr. Mayweather in those places he is most vulnerable, his mouth and his inflated ego.
