Danny Green Stops Roy Jones Jr. in First Round!

By , About.com GuideDecember 2, 2009

Follow me on:

Tune-up bouts are always a risky proposition. A star fighter can overlook an opponent and deliver a subpar performance. Or suffer a bad cut or injury which forces the delay of the bigger event. Typically, however, the only way to jeopardize the big fight is to look so bad that the public will no longer pay to see it ... like by getting stopped in the tune-up ... in the first round ... which is exactly what happened to Roy Jones Jr. when he ventured to Sydney, Australia to take on Danny Green in a tune-up before a long-awaited rematch with Bernard Hopkins.

Midway through round one, Green landed a left followed by a right to the side of Jones' neck and head. The punch didn't look like anything special but Jones went down and was clearly hurt as he rose to his feet to continue. For the next 30 seconds, Green threw punch after punch and Jones simply covered up. None of the punches did much damage but Jones wasn't fighting back and his legs looked shot so referee Howard Foster jumped in and stopped the fight just 2:02 after it began.

Roy Jones Jr. vs. Danny Green: Video of Entire Fight

While the rematch is no longer viable, Bernard Hopkins still took care of his tune-up business later in the day by outpointing Enrique Ornelas. The ageless Hopkins, now 44, delivered a typical Bernard Hopkins performance - taking a few rounds to figure out his opponent and then using his superior skills to start winning rounds. Hopkins clearly won but, with the fight taking place in Philadelphia, the official scorecards reflected a little home cooking at 120-109, 119-109 and 118-110.

Bernard Hopkins needs a new opponent. Roy Jones Jr. needs to retire.

We live in an age of instant news on cable and the internet and of course, everyone knows Roy Jones met defeat almost immediately. If ever there was a reason for him to retire and not sustain any more damage, physical and mental, this poor episode in his career must be a wake up call. Roy Jones has had a spectacular early career, and unfortunately, like too many once very good fighters, he seems to be unable to let go and move on. There is no doubt that every fighter with any career length is damaged goods, but those who have been repeatedly knocked out, or been through very brutal rounds, have already sutained damage to one degree or another. It is time for Mr. Jones to retire.

What a sad sight to see RJ lose to the likes of this guy. I’ve never been a big fan of his style and now its definitely time for him to hang them up. It’s been a good career, but enough is enough. He can’t take a solid punch!

Sad to see Roy go out this way. If he has any sense he will retire now. His legend is still intact, but any more fights like this and people will start forgetting how incredibly dominant and talented he once was.

tony you must be an american. hold on to your dreams of hope you sore loser. green is only 4 years younger than jones, go figure. jones has been knocked out before, green hasn’t… green may not have fame in the states, but when green fights… he fights… a good fighter doesnt need to show off to the crowd likes jones. just give up. you lost…. we won…. and thats the it is.

December 2, 2009 at 6:47 pm
(13) mitch :

I think RJ didnt take danny green seriously he thought he would jump in the ring and giv to the aussie but he got a rude shock instead.

December 2, 2009 at 6:48 pm
(14) Ron :

I agree with many of the other comments. Roy Jones was one of the greatest Boxer / Punchers of our time. He just doesn’t know when to call it quits. For all you Aussies Roy would have pummeled the likes of Danny Green when he was the Roy Jones we knew and loved! Hang it up Roy we still love u!

Didnt green got the living day lights punched out of him by Mundine?…Mundine??? RJ’s old enough to be his grand dad. whats the glory in that.

(16) Manny :

Gentlemen the fight is over, it was not a fight between the Americans and Australians. It was a fight between Green and Jones Jr, it was a fair fight and Green retains his title. No need to sully either boxer as both were and are, inspirations to many. Congratulations Green.

green was gracious in victory which was good for him to show, but still doesnt change the fact he is from that backwards highly racist cesspool of a country astralia so even with this win he still isnt going to get any respect from anyone but der der australians

I have not read so much crap in my life – Only Manny’s comments are worth reading.

I am an Australian and a huge RJJ fan. All these comments about Danny Green are disgraceful. He is nearly the same age and caught RJJ with a great shot. I don’t think RJJ would have thought Green could have done what he did and did not respect his power enough. A legend of the fight game had his worst night and didn’t deserve it. Your a legend RJJ. Every fighter is only one punch away from being knocked out and you learnt it last night RJJ.
Still a fan and always will be.

RJJ is.. (was) an amazing boxer. He totally didnt take this fight seriously & for that he paid the price.
It was the chest punch that rocked him & left him getting knocked out by the following right overhead punch..
Green owned this fight & deserves the glory for it..

Aussie Aussie Aussie…

(31) mike :

Relax people… i dont know if this was fixed or not… but people gotta stop acting like he won against the real Roy Jones… im sick of fighters beating a legend out of his prime and acting like they did beat them in their prime…. im not saying danny green is but all his fans seem to act like this is the case. Congrats if he really won fair and swaure… but lets not get over hyped here. Roy Jone in his prime would have played with danny green.

RJJ looked awesome in the jeff lacy fight, everyone predicted RJJ who was in suposed ”world dominating form” to dominate Green, but he lost..get over it!..RAY ..how could RJJ possibly be Greens grandad, RJJ is 40 ..Danny is 36…

GO DANNY !!! Aussie Aussie Aussie

(34) Chris Jones JR :

I was there and I wish it went longer! Congrats to Danny Green but I m still RJJ’s biggest fan! I got my signed glove and photos from where I was sitting. It is hard to swollow but it is history now. In my bias opinion i think the ref jumped in a little to early but thats boxing. Danny did beat Roy but not in his prime and if he didn’t get caught with that shot who knows how much longer it would of gone on for. The thing that upset me the most (coming from an aussie myself) was the disrespect shown by some of the public booing and shouting things out during the american national anthem! We were very lucky to have such a talented boxing icon over here, and the whole aus vs usa was not what it should of been about! Atleast to me it was about seeing my boxing hero fight, but its sad to see it cut so short. RJJ will still go down as one of the best ever, again congrats Danny Green but I doubt Bernard Hopkins “s&*t in his pants”.

December 3, 2009 at 1:14 pm

Congrats to Green ! 49 unanswered punches, time for the ref to stop the fight. To those who demean Australia, this USA citizen thinks Australia is a good country. And yes, I would move there if I were not so old ! Australia, fight like Green to keep your freedom !

December 3, 2009 at 1:37 pm
(40) Jon :

This was the worst performance by Roy Jones I have ever seen. However, the shot to the neck and bottom of the head area is a very damaging punche that boxers usually never land, or absorb for that matter.

Regardless, the facts are that Roy Jones was a physically gifted fighter that was one of the best in the world at one time. Danny Green is a legitimate top 10 cruiserweight.

I don’t want to see Roy Jones fight again, but I would like to see Danny Green in a fight with Chad Dawson at a catchweight of 179! What a wonderful matchup that would be.

andrew eisele -your a toss, this wasnt a tune up fight for rjj. danny is a 3 time and current champ. grow a brain

(42) Ken :

Just watched the video… that looked suspicious, but Roy also looked pretty dazed, and Green certainly stepped up to finish the TKO. So many great boxers fight past their prime. I can’t see Roy throwing away BIG pay-per-view money against B-Hop. Thus it is hard for me to believe the fix was on.
Looks like Roy got caught, and all the years and punches have caught up with him. It happens… ask Oscar, Tito, Tyson, Evander, Sugar Ray, etc, etc. Eventually you meet somebody faster, younger, stronger.
Congrats Green – come on over and give it a whirl at the MGM against a top Light-Heavy, you earned it.

December 3, 2009 at 11:23 pm
(43) RonBrad :

Illegal punch to the back of the head, pulling the hand of Roy Jones down and holding Roy’s head. Where was the fouls. many boxers come back from worst and win the fight. Remember when Jermaine Taylor burned out? Th Ghost was out of it and came back and KO’d Taylor. Also a heavier division makes a difference. Roy keep your hands up and stay off the ropes.

(46) Peter Perth :

Jees there are some real nobheads making comments these days. regardless of how good or bad a boxer has been if he thinks he is ready for a fight and steps into the ring then it is up to him to do his best on the day. In my view RJJ is one of the best fighters pound for pound since Ali, but the longer you fight the older you get and the slower you get. Roy didnt compensate for any of these in training. He still thought he was lightning fast and could keep his left arm down and, Danny said thank you and hit him. I admit I think the fight could have gone a bit longer but the reff was there and the decision to stop the fight was made. END of STORY

December 4, 2009 at 1:56 am
(47) jim :

of course it was fixed, that was clear. Rjj threw half a dozen jabs whilst walking back into a corner, gloved up and let green hit him twice then went down and pretended to be hurt gloved up again and waited for the ref to do his job and picked up his check. It’s that simple, if you can’t see it or admit it you’re blind or an idiot. On top of it all the whole pay per view event was soooo boring 3 s**t fights, some moron on the guitar and waaaay too many ads and retarded interviews all for the low low price of $27.00. Compare this to a ufc event and its no wonder boxing is rapidly losing popularity to mma. There’s just no credibility left in the sport.

(51) Norway4Life :

i was watching the fight, and CLEARLY the telecasters doesn’t know their boxing at all. they was all over the place! “if u beat a legend, u become a legend” and calling Danny Green the king of the world. even Green himself acted as if he had just put on a masterpiece performance, when the truth is that Jones got lazy and got caught, the ref jumped in too early.

my point is: all you aussies, and everyone else. calm down. this win doesn’t mean jack s***. 10 years ago Danny Green would be so dominated that he wouldnt leave his room for the rest of the year.. get a grip on reality people. its not that big of a deal for Green.

December 6, 2009 at 5:57 pm
(52) Peter :

You Aussie’s and Americans are funny. I read the comments… nice to see everyone getting along…lol
Green deserves credit for sure. Anytime you score a KO in the 1st round against a legend like Jones, you demand respect.
As for Jones… time to hang up the gloves. Your best days are behind you now. I remember how great you were for many years.
Americans & Aussies… stop fighting! We are all friends remember.

If you -check- Scully RECORD You will see he -fought- a long line of Top Class people from his era; while Otis “picked” a smart course. I think the two are -pretty close- in the RATINGS (if you know BOXING!)

(57) Harold :

I am a big Roy Jones fan and I hate to see him retire it is time. His style no longer fits his age. If he’d changed his style 4yrs ago or rite after he suffered his KO against Glenn Johnson maybe he would be more effective. That’s the reason why B-Hop is still hangin tough b/c of his style.
As for Dennis Green the best fighter at his weight now is “Bad “Chad Dawson. He’s undefeated and the “Champ”. He’s already called out Bernard Hopkins and he’s draggin his feet b/c he knows that this would be the guy who could make him look his age. I’m no hater I never seen the Green guy fight but jus from the clip I did see Dawson would clearly out box him. Take nothing away from Green but although Roy who was one of the most spectacular fighters of my era is NOW no Chad Dawson. So after Dawson gets a shot at Hopkins your boy Green would be more than welcome to “sign on the dotted line”.

(62) Allen :

A perfect example is the name Antonio Margarito. He was so relying on using illegal hand wraps that once the boxing commission prevented him from using the illegal wraps…he loses. Danny Greeen is a good fighter and up till the wraps were stopped so was Antonio Margarito. I’m not saying that Roy Jones would definately beat him in a rematch, but I would be willing to bet on observing a longer fight to say the least. With that being said “yes” Roy should retire, and simply because his ability to avoid and take punches has deminished and it does’nt matter what would have happened in his prime. It is what it is, right? In regards to a Bernard Hopkins/Danny Green fight, in my opinion Hopkins would be a longer but extremely boring fight. The younger and more agressive Hopkins would be something to rave about against Green. Otherwise we have a Calzaghe follower in the footsteps of defeating the almost already defeated. Green appears to be in his prime, and needs to step up his selection of opponents. Although if I needed a warm up fight to win, I also would choose a lesser active but glorified legend . It just makes sense. Both Jones and Hopkins even currently will dominate most no name fighters, right? Something tells me that it also makes for better business sense. Champions should always challenge champoins. Chad Dawson, Jean Pascal, and Tavoris Cloud would be challenges that could define the carreer of Danny Green if he were successful in these matches. Until then, it does appear that Hopkins is next. Boxing fans as they do with Jones/Hopkins are still hoping to see the once great fighter/s now legends rejuvinate what once was then to what is now. Hopkins and Jones as long as they stop now will always be remembered for their accomplishments which can never be taken from them. As for Danny Green..Congradulations on a note worthy warm up fight. However, the tactics that were used by Margarito backfired. There is a lesson to be learned is to not count on especially faulty and inethical practices. Fix it now while you have the chance to preserve your legacy!!!

Roy Jones JR. is a shell of his former self and i think he knows it he’s just at a point where he is capitalizing on his name… no disrespect to Danny Green he did what he was suppose to do fight and win but this isnt the Roy Jones that out boxed James Toney…who viciously a couple of months ago beat up on Green in a sparring session for fun…just youtube it…Roy was done the moment he won the Heavy Weight title mentally he was at the place of…this is the pennacle now the decline which was seen in the 3 Tarver fights (D-Win, Ko-2 loss, D-Loss) or the Ko by Glen Johnson who i felt is the only man to really beat Roy up…or that farce fight against Calzahge Danny for the most part is up and coming and he’s a good guy from what i hear, i like to see him face Glen who is on the way down but an excellent gatekeeper then maybe a Chad Dawson if he wins..Green may not be as talented skill wise but he has heart and a good punch…which makes for excitement

(64) wazza :

first of all the hand wraps danny green used was very illegal, which will be proven soon.roy jones camp objected to this but he was told to fight or be disqualified.using the wraps danny had gave the immediate advantage and can be likened to hitting someone with a concealed weapon..so no matter what danny did it would have an immediate effect, and he knew that very well..his wrappings were twice as wide and twice as hard..i do believe danny was extremely lucky but the impact to the head to rjj was multiplied by the wraps..danny green is a one dimensional boxer who is limited in skill, and i believe the people in his corner and those in authority were happy to assist danny green cheat on the night..danny is strong ,a hard hitter but lacks the skill as mundine has already proven this…look beyond yr skin colour and racist aussie atittudes.ya bunch of backward bigots…..im australian born and bred..

the fight was short, and didn’t really show who’s the better boxer, so we will all have to wait for the rematch. for one thing Green was the aggresser in the short fight and that counts for something. Don’t underestimate Green, thats what everyone does!

Another typical yank response…lmao u guys are hopeless stick to starting wars u cant finish!

first of all the hand wraps danny green used was very illegal, which will be proven soon.roy jones camp objected to this but he was told to fight or be disqualified.using the wraps danny had gave the immediate advantage and can be likened to hitting someone with a concealed weapon..so no matter what danny did it would have an immediate effect, and he knew that very well..his wrappings were twice as wide and twice as hard..i do believe danny was extremely lucky but the impact to the head to rjj was multiplied by the wraps..danny green is a one dimensional boxer who is limited in skill, and i believe the people in his corner and those in authority were happy to assist danny green cheat on the night..danny is strong ,a hard hitter but lacks the skill as mundine has already proven this…look beyond yr skin colour and racist aussie atittudes.ya bunch of backward bigots…..im australian born and bred..

Maybe u should take ur own advice…look at what was posted…and u’ll see who started trash talking countries.

I doubt u are an australian if so im saddened to call you one of our won :(

Doesn’t matter where the fighters are from, or what excuses can be made. The simple fact is RJ got knocked the fk out & some people cant take it & rage and bag whateva country their from.

But hey were more than happy with our country..seems like jealousy and childish tactics to get a childish retort.

Australia has been voted over 20 times the best country in the world by peers and we know it. Not only do we have freedom we have people in parliament with an IQ over 12….that dont make war on any country that holds something we want :)

Not only that we are also rated as “the biggest” sporting nation in the world….so fortunately we know what were talking about as we actually play all these sports we don’t just watch them

Rant over gl with ur responses

p.s I admire the 3 americans that posted their opinions on the fight and not about our country.

A true show of sportsmanship and none of my idiotic responses were intended for any of u, just rubbish to throw back at the idiotic statements made about our country :)

Did Danny Green hit RJJ on the temple or in the back part of the head? Watching it online does not provide enough quality. But the punch looked to be a regular punch, nothing devastating, so I wonder if it landed on the back of his head.
