WBC/WBO middleweight champ Kelly Pavlik returned from a 10-month layoff (due to a staph infection on his left hand) to deliver a beating to Miguel Espino in front of a hometown crowd in Youngstown, Ohio. Espino was a contestant in season one of the boxing reality show The Contender.
Espino, attempting to turn the bout into a brawl, was deducted a point after round one for punching after the bell and was warned for repeated low blows in rounds two and three. Pavlik, however, simply overpowered Espino, dropping him twice in the fourth with uppercuts and then again in the fifth. Espino was ready to continue after the final knockdown but his corner had seen enough and asked referee Steve Smoger to stop the fight. The time was 1:44 of round five.
On the undercard, Samuel Peter scored a fourth round TKO over Gabe Brown. Peter is a former (alpha-belt) heavyweight champ. Brown weighed 363 pounds and is 0-7-3 in his last ten bouts. Nice matchmaking . . .
