When Roy Jones Jr. was knocked out in the first round by Danny Green on Dec. 2, it was widely assumed that a proposed rematch with Bernard Hopkins would be scrapped. Remember what they say about assuming anything? Well, that goes double for the sport of boxing.
At 41, Roy Jones Jr., who has been KO'd three times while going 5-5 in his last ten bouts, should retire. Hopkins, still going strong at 45, should fight Chad Dawson to determine who's the best light heavyweight in the world. Instead, Jones and Hopkins are opting for a payday in a pointless fight that is likely to take place on April 3 in Las Vegas (and on PPV!).
Jones won a 12-round unanimous decision on May 22, 1993 in their first meeting. Anytime from 1994 to 2004, a Jones-Hopkins rematch would have been a big event. Now, sadly, fight fans will just be hoping than Jones doesn't get badly hurt in a bout which serves no purpose other than giving Hopkins a chance to settle an old score against a washed-up rival. No thanks ...

Danny Green hit Roy in the back of the head. Even if it was not intentional it doesn’t take away from the fact. You know it amazes me how some of you guy call yourself boxing fans an abandoned all knowledge of the RULES. Personally i blame it on the MMA generation who get used to seeing that kind of combat everyday on television. Alot of people dont like Roy Jones but hey if Randy Coture comes back to MMA and loses and still has more fights on his contract AND NO ONE COMPLAINS, then hell if Roy wants to fight let the man fight and shutup about it. All you so called sportswriters just mimick what the other say to the point i see the same articles on different websites as their own. Roy beat the crap out of Lacy and Danny got lucky thats all. He couldn’t even finish the job Roy was on his feet obviously shaken by the rabbit shot to the back of the skull and also the acqusations that Dsnny had Margarito Gauge on his hands which if you research is accurate. If you dont want to watch this fight then don’t, because I WILL.
Shut up, a boxing fan. This fight SUCKS, and you are a SUCKER.
As with Jermain Taylor, each of the Jones knockouts were major brain events all very serious. It is likely Jones has already sufferred brain damage after those three serious events. He is very foolish to risk more damage, especially against such a crafty and strong fighter as Bernard Hopkins. There is not much that is compelling about this match. One assumes Jones is financially well off, as is Hopkins. There comes a time to stop and live. I would urge the medical authorities wherever a fight is planned to challenge the fight if only to spare Jones of serious harm.
SHUTUP BOXING FAN BLA BLA BLA BLA. Sucker i think not a boxing fan i think so. I’m the guy who watches the Friday night fights and keeps tabs on the amatuers. You are just a bandwagoner who watches the main event. You know i have to mention “TODD” being thats this is an obscure boxing forum with an article about a fight you say sucks soo much, i gaurentee this is not the first article or place you heard about this fight. So why are you even here reading about a fight you have no interest in? So you shutup hipocrit(=
Hopkins and Jones jr fight is a good fight but it should not be on PPV I know Jones lost his last fight but I still rooting for him.
This fight is a joke.
Why do people get so angry and aggressive in internet forums? It shows a high level of immaturity and low level inteligence! I agree with ‘A Boxing Fan’, despite Jones being in his twighlight years in terms of his career, I think he was caught cold by Green and as such deserves a Hopkins re-match.
I was at the fight.
It was a punch to the side almost back of the head.
Roy didnt appear hurt really more stunned.
Green didnt land and more clean shots.
He wasnt hurting Roy.
Roy unfortunately didnt return, so they stopped it.
Would Roy have won if the bout was allowed to go on…..I believe so.
I think it was stopped to soon, ok if a fighter is being hit in the face, knocked around etc, Roy was in control and totally covered up, if he made the bell it would have been a different story.
He may well find the motivation to fight Hopkins…who knows I’d watch it.
This fight is a joke! I’ve never considered any fan of RJJ to be a real boxing fan. The guy ducked everyone including a rematch with Hopkins. He beat Hopkins when Hopkins was green then in early 2000 when Hopkins was seasoned RJJ wouldn’t even consider a rematch. I still don’t know how Nigel Benn didn’t get a shot right after the Mclellan fighter. I still can’t believe that so called “boxing fans” bought into the RJJ hype his whole carrier. Oh yeah he did Vinny Pazienza, that was huge! What a joke.
Once again let me educate you “Realest” since I’m not a real boxing fan considering the fact i like alot of boxers not just RJJ. The “fact of the matter is is that Bernard Hopkins owes his success to Roy Jones Jr. Bernard Hopkins doesn’t deny this either. It is a known fact that Roy Jones spoke to Bernard when he went to Light Heavy and Bernard kept calling for a rematch. Roy gave Bernard the advice of staying at his current weight and winning there to add to his longevity and success in boxing. He told him that “if” he went up to fight him and he beat him again which at that time in his career he would have, then the boxing world would write him off as they do everyone who goes most of there career undefeated and then gets goes on a losing streak. Streak i mean two losses in a row and then the fat critics start to write you off as finished which is totally unfair considering how hard it is to make it to the top in boxing i mean give me a break. Bernard took his advice fighting smaller men and winning now go look at his record and where he is in his career. Most of the boxers at the time were jealous of Roy and said he ducked fighters please. He beat the champs of those divisions and took thier belts thats all that matters so put that in your pipe and smoke…..and thats real(=
There are fights we all wait for and don’t happen; fights that happen ans surprise everyone as great fights, and fights that are not worth watching for any reason. Mr. Hopkins has remained amazingly fit and competitive despite age, largely because he is a great general of ring tactics and talent. Mr. Jones has deteriorated and been badly injured, whether or not it shows immediately, by each of his knockouts and pounding in his latest fights. Whatever the imperative is for the Jones-Hopkins fight to take place, the prospect of a great fight, or an even interesting fight is not part of the equation. Simply to see Mr. Jones absorb more punishment, whether he is knocked out again or not, is not reaon enough to pay attention to this fight. Mr. Taylor, much younger that Mr. Jones, received wise advice that he obviously took to heart and has retired from the ring, at least for the moment. One would hope Mr. Jones would do the same.
Roy Jones,jr. in his younger days won fights on his athletic ability. Now unlike Bhop his lack of fundamentals are showing up. Bernard is younger than his age in years like Archie More was in his day and is technically very sound.
Thank you “the realist” Jones was well managed, he did not fight Nigel Benn because Roy’s connections knew he could go the distance against Nigel.
Dispite all the money that could have been made against Dariuz Michkelshki the fight didn’t happen,
because Michkelshki in his prime was dangerous fight, which was really a tos-up.
jones and hopkins fight will be a fiasco that reeks of greed and money. these 2 over the hill fighters should retire or be retired forcefully.they were legends for their times.but their time time has come and gone. puuuuuleese cancel this trajedy.
Roy Jones should retire so he can enjoy money and life while he is still fairly healthy. I would like to know who are Jones advisers, and does he take any advice or always thinks he knows better?
Roy Jones was a great boxer and does not have to prove anything. We all get older but we should be wiser.
You have two guys who don’t like being hit. One who lays on the ropes trying to protect a china chin( RJJ) and another who won’t or can’t throw enough punches( B-Hop), and we’re supposed to buy this? Yeah right! B-Hop rushes in with a rt. to the head followed by bodyshots. RJJ covers up on the ropes, throws a hook here and there. B-Hop leans on him with more shots to the body. Jones shakes his head to the crowd “he ain’t got nothin”!. Same ole, same ole. As much as i like Hop I AIN’T BUYING!!!
