Poll: Who Do You Think Won Pacquiao-Marquez III?

From , Former About.com GuideNovember 13, 2011

Follow me on:

After thirty-six rounds, neither Manny Pacquiao nor Juan Manuel Marquez has established clear-cut superiority in their trilogy. After scoring a controversial majority decision last night in Las Vegas, Pacquiao now holds a 2-0-1 advantage over Marquez ... on the official scorecards. However, public opinion is once again divided on who truly deserved the decision.

Their third meeting was much like the first two. If you tend to score a close round in favor of the busier, more aggressive fighter - even if his aggressiveness is largely ineffective - you probably feel Pacquiao won the fight. If you are a fan of ring generalship and clean, effective counter-punching - even if it means throwing relatively few punches - you likely appreciate the technical craft of Marquez.

Who do you think won Pacquiao-Marquez III? Vote in our poll.

I said it Isaid it, if Pac is on steriods he’ll win if not he will loose.
Let’s face it he lost, often enough the jury’s decision is not the right one we’ve seen this many many times.

But anyway now we’ve come to know Pac performing without steroids and it was an obvious between this fight than against Margarito’s.

Lets not waste anymore words on this it was clear to see
If he fights Pretty boy like this he won’t last 3 rounds Yes !

Is pacquiao a terrific fighter? Yes…did he win last night’s fight? No..he may have grabbed a rd or 2 when not much action took place because he was the busier man but the majority of the key clean shots, counterpunches, and combinations landed were by JMM..lets call a spade a spade..he got screwed again..it was a close fight that he showed to have the slight upper hand in by timing the faster, more agressive pacman and landing some devestating shots in the process

(3) Ruben \kusch says:

Firstly, Vegas has the strictest and most stringent drug testing in the world to box there. Manny has ALWAYS taken the tests without question and without ever a trace… so stop with the bashing…. he has NEVER used steroids, period! All professional commentators in the sport agree with this!
As for the bout, stop your wining, STATS don’t lie! Manny landed more punches, hence won more rounds… simple concept! Another fact about boxing is this, if you only ever fight to defend, and only counter punch, you will always be behind… no matter how hard you think you hit your opponent, its the amount of landed that matters. Marquez had many hard punches, but mostly only landed them on Manny’s gloves giving no points. The proof is in the landed punches, no disputing this,,, Manny Pacquaio is the clear winner!

(4) Jake says:

Stats do lie. In boxing you are awarded points for “effective aggressiveness and hard clean punches”. Pac was aggresive, but not effective. Marquez was not as aggressive, but his punches was clean & hard and much more effective. You can always argue that Pac, being the champ, has to do less than the challenger. But the whole deal with this fight was defense vs. offence. This time defense clearly won. If you won’t award counterboxing, then you should never make a fight between this two guys. It’s a shame and a disgrace to boxing, that the judges won’t embrace boxing in it’s totality. If you truly understand boxing, you know that Juan Manuel Marquez won. Boxing has lost its credibility. Floyd Maywheather is now the pound for pound king. He doesn’t even have to fight Pacquaio to prove it. Juan did it for him.

(5) mike wicks says:

A fight is scored on a round to round basis this means that one fighter may win 2 rounds overwhelmingly draw 2 and lose 8 close rounds and loses the fight right or wrong that is the scoring system the judges are supoosed to follow.

(6) ROB says:

I’m tired of the idiots who keep thinking that Manny is taking steroids. Until he is proven otherwise, keep your mouths shut.

(7) Obinna says:

Marquez seems to be what ken norton was to Ali. Normally great fighters(Ali&Manny) who just have a fighter(Norton&Marquez) they cannot overwhelm or win convincingly as they usually do. I honestly thought Marquez did enough to win though Manny was more aggressive, I am a Manny fan.
One more rematch might be d answer but manny has to find a way of countering marquez counter punching it really puts manny off balance.

(8) tonyp says:

I don’t agree wit the comment the guy made about more punches landed means u win more rounds… If u land a hundred punches the first round but never land another the whole 12rounds. In the other fighter lands every round but still only ends up landing 99 who should win? I say the guy that won the 11 other rounds.. boxing goes by rounds not punches..

November 14, 2011 at 4:26 pm
(9) tonyp says:

In as far as the more aggressive person should win the fight is bougs.. if u watch Mayweather fight he allows almost all his opponents to be the aggressor.. in just sets back in picks them apart, over hand right after over hand right just like marquize did to PAC!!! If pac felt he won he wouldn’t almost guarantee the loser marquize a rematch instead of fighting the next guy up floyd. Ijs

Juan Manuel period, the first might have been a draw, the second hands down Juan and the third hands down Juan and I love Manny but dam what do fighters in Vegas have to do besides a cold hard knockout to win when they are the under dog it is a pattern there, bring the fight somewhere else. You can set your watch if it is not a knockout their favorite fighter who brings in the dollars is going to win. I absolutely cannot see paying for anymore fights there. Not like this. Shame on you guys!!!

(11) Air101 says:

2 judges scored the fight in favor of Pacquiao and Compubox stats shows Manny did a better job in punching Marquez the whole fight. PACQUIAO CLEARLY WON, Marquez’s camp and fans can complain forever but the fight is already decided by EXPERTS! so your opinions about Marquez being robbed is completely irrelevant. Plus, have you seen the dirty trick by Marquez on the fight? the photo and video on youtube has gone viral. I do suggest you check it out. PACMAN is the best, period.

he didnt cheat u dik, if uve ever boxed before ull know a southpaw and a othadox usually tread on each others foot by accident the idea is to keep your leading foot to the out side of your opponents leading foot, and jmm clearly won manny was bust up and he knows it freddie knew it khan knew it and jmm knew it but yet again the people who didnt know it were the people that matter! :@

(13) EddieP says:

…forget about the smoke and mirrors stuff an effective aggressive fighter will always win over an overly cautious fighter waiting for the right moment to throw a punch.
What happened to the notion that a challenger has to show and prove that he must win the fight from the the champion. I remember Marquez alot more aggressive in previous fights, his caution along with bad info from his corner led to his loss.

November 16, 2011 at 3:14 pm
(14) Air101 says:

@gregg alebon
he did cheat u dik, if its really an accident it shouldve happened once or twice but Marquez did it 6 or 7 times throughout the fight and this didnt happen on their first 2 outings hmmm accident? southpaw & orthodox usually tread on each other? Manny did not step on Marquez’s foot during the fight,Marquez will never win against Manny cause he’s scared like Floyd to go toe to toe with Manny. Manny Pacquiao forever, a talented, clean and fair fighter.

Everybody knows Paquiao is a true champion bt everybody also needs to aknowledge the truth. He did not fight like a champion n marquez did and the judge that gave the fight to paquiao 116 to like 113 or something like that must have been f*cken sleeping the first 6 rounds or something cus das some f*cken bullsh*t!!!!! Marquez eres nuestro campion I todos lo sabemos!!!! Viva mexico cabroness!!!!!

(18) Jopads says:

Hypothetical: if the judges and compubox are wrong, are the other spectators correct? Or if the judges scored in favor of Marquez and later saw the stats in the compubox, will you think people will believe that Marquez have won?

I was frustrated to see Pacquiao not being able to knock Marquez out but frustrations aside, I don’t think Pacquiao lost this match either.

(19) Bonz says:

If lawyers use ‘jury profiling’ in picking the right jury that favors their client…I wonder if the powers that be in boxing have ‘judges profiling’ and pick the right group of judges that either favor sluggers , aggressive fighters like Pacquiao instead of stylists, counterpunchers like Marquez or vice versa, depending on who brings revenue to Vegas.

(20) Air101 says:

@ross
idiot people like you(ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha) just won’t understand and accept that there are really talented, hardworking and fair people who can achieve such greatness. Manny deserves everything because he worked hard for it without steroids, ducking oppponents, loaded gloves, cheap shots and foot tricks. PACMAN is the best period.

(24) AntiRacist says:

Poechiaw used steriods, look at the fight against Margarito and compare it to III marquez.

You will notice a degraded muscle tone on Poechie.
His arm musculs appeared floppy in action, not so compact and trained enough.
He went through hard training though, but without steriods.
That’s obvious ask anyone with some knowledge in this field.

So that’s why he wasn’t that vigorously muscled, merely sloppy and not that flashed speed he expressed especially against Margarito

(25) Brian says:

when it comes to boxing, testing is a joke. They only test urine because that is all that is required. in this day and age every athlete is using HGH which cannot sometimes show in blood tests. which is why Floyd demanded olympic style blood testing. the olympics have the strictest testing. it was a draw. Floyd ftw!

(26) Mike Wicks says:

Marquez did not do enough. Why given the previous results?. If he had been more aggresive it does not follow he would have won because he in turn would have been open to counters. His corner made a tacticle mistake by continually telling Marquez he was winning.

November 20, 2011 at 9:17 am
(27) mike wicks says:

I watched the fight last night. It was close not particularly riveting. Marquez team made a big tactical error in telling their fighter he was winning. He needed to finish strong to remove all doubt, but he didn’t take to many chances all through the fight, so it was left to Manny to be the aggressor. It is difficult to go with the challenger if he has thrown and landed less punches than the champion. Who knows if he had opened up more he would have been hit more, safety first does not oust an established champ. I think a draw was the most Marquez could have expected.
I was impressed with Chavez Jr stopping Manfredo despite Max Kellerman’s barely concealed dislike for Chavez and continued trumpeting for Martinez. Once again it was Roy Jones who gave a studied assesment of Chavez improvement and progress. As for a Martinez fight given Martinez last performance he would not be a certainty to beat Jr. who is much bigger. The fight will need to be made soon as Chavez may not be able to stay at the weight.

You just need to turn the sound off your HD TY and see Marquez won the fight.

November 21, 2011 at 6:57 am
(29) mike wicks says:

@ Thomas you make a good point as some commentators are biased, but the judges were not subject to the commentary. Punches thrown punches landed per round to round is what decided this fight.

(30) Tina says:

I really like Manny and admit he is very talented but I do not think he

won the fight, a draw would have been a better outcome.

Manny was quicker but Marquez punches were more effective.

I really would like to see a rematch between these two great boxers.

As for Chavez jr. , I was impressed with his performance, I think he

can beat Martinez.

FREDDIE ROACH YOU HAVE DONE A GREAT JOB!

I have to say, lately the judges scoring makes me sick.

STOP CRYING PEOPLE!

Manny beat Marquez thrice!

Get over it…period!

November 28, 2011 at 10:10 pm
(32) jayho says:

Judges were trained to observe the fight.. how about you insisting Marquez won the fight?
They have the best view for the fight, how about you?

Manny beat Marquez thrice and Marquez can never get a win over Pacquiao.

It feels bad for Pacquiao when Maquez came in the Philippines wearing a T-shirt saying “I was robbed twice”.. where in fact Manny was the one robbed during the draw.

I feels worse for Maquez when Manny won the third fight, a really close fight but there is no way Marquez could have won the fight. He counters as he stepped on Manny’s foot 17 times! Cheater never wins.

(36) Shane says:

I watched it on ppv, thinking Marquez won just, because he landed bigger cleaner shots. I watched it for a second time just then, and I actually came to the conclusion that Manny won, and i missed alot of shots that he landed (cause he is so fast). But it was so close. At the end of the day, Marquez still hasn”t been able to knock down Manny in any fight. Further, I think it is fair to say, that you have to take the crown from the champion. Marquez didn”t do this. It would have been just as controversial if Pacman had of lost. So, on that basis, a win for pacman or a draw was the only fair result. I would have preferred the draw. But who cares, these guys are likely to fight again anyway.

(37) Charlie says:

Lets not be rediculous people… I saw the fight and clearly Manny won…no problem. I think a lot of mexican fans are letting their emotions lead their opinions. Lets not forget that Manny also holds more belts in more weight divisions than any other fighter OF ALL TIME!!!…. this is not some type of mistake or conspiracy…. I do think it will be extremely hard for him to defeat Mayweather though… taking into consideration the ease with which Mayweather beat Marquez

saw the face of Pacquiao when the judges awarded the victori, saw his reaction. if the saw will know that he himself could not believe he had won the fight, he knows that the judges gave the fight. given three fights to be honest, who does not accept it does not know box, or where they were watching because I always saw the fight
