What Next for Mayweather?

Tuesday May 25, 2004
Floyd Mayweather made the move to 140 look easy, outpointing a game but outclassed DeMarcus Corley over 12 rounds. But what comes next for the undefeated pound-for-pound claimant is far from clear. The win over Corley earns Mayweather the right to fight for the WBC super lightweight title, but beltholder Arturo Gatti has other business to take care of first -- a July 24 defense against Leonard Dorin. After that, Gatti would be under contract for one more fight with HBO before being free for a big money PPV bout with Mayweather. Fortunately for Mayweather, there are plenty of other attractive options at 140, including the young (Francisco Bojado and Miguel Cotto), the not-quite-so-young (Sharmba Mitchell, Ricky Hatton, Paul Spadafora and Vivian Harris) and the true champ (Kostya Tszyu - currently sidelined with an injury).
