Mora Takes Contender Title
Sergio Mora outpointed Peter Manfredo Jr. over seven rounds to win the $1 million grand prize in "The Contender", NBC's reality boxing tournament. Mora was a slight underdog going into the fight but was much quicker and sharper than Manfredo throughout the bout. All three judges saw the fight for Mora by scores of 70-63, 69-64 and 68-65. On the undercard, semi-finalists Alfonso Gomez and Jesse Brinkley squared off with Gomez winning a unanimous five-round decision and a reported $200,000. Also, Ishe Smith won a unanimous decision over Anthony Bonsante; Jeff Fraza won by split decision over Brent Cooper; and Jimmy Lange won a majority decision over Tarick Salmaci. While NBC decided not to pick up "The Contender" for a second season, Stallone spent most of the night talking about rematches and series creator Mark Burnett said "if NBC doesn't want to do this, we'll go somewhere else". So fight fans may not have seen the last of "The Contender" after all ...
