Peter Edges Toney by Split Decision

Sunday September 3, 2006
Samuel Peter wasn't very impressive against James Toney but he did enough to impress two of the only three people that really mattered -- the judges. Neither fighter was in great shape. Neither fighter looked particularly impressive. Neither fighter was ever really hurt. In a fight that was difficult to score, the only real edge seemed to be the point that was taken away from Peter for rapidly cuffing Toney twice on the ears with both hands as Toney was pushing him back against the ropes with his head in the ninth round.

As expected, Toney was - by far - the craftier fighter and the sharper puncher and seemed to do enough to win the fight. Nevertheless, Peter's amateurish clubbing shots apparently did enough to impress judges Alejandro Rochin and Richard Flaherty who gave him the fight by the absurdly wide margin of 116-111. Judge Gale Van Hoy's scorecard read a much more plausible 115-112 for Toney.

It's hard to feel sorry for a fighter as grossly out of shape as Toney (not to mention his illegal use of the steroid nandrolone in his bout with John Ruiz), but he was the better man on this night.

It’s too bad Toney is not a “class act”. You would like to follow a talented fighter like Toney, and cheer him on to a number of victories, but it’s tough to want to see a low class thug like Toney win a fight. I personally WANT to see him get dominated in the ring! He has no respect for the sport, and for other fighters. With people like Floyd Mayweather, and Shane Mosley fighting (Class acts! GREAT fighters, and NICE guys!) I hope we get a Heavy Weight that will not only clean up the division and rid us of bums like Toney, but also do it in style and class!

Tony dominated this fight with his smart boxing style and skills.Peter looked so amateur it was silly , but he happend to connect with a couple of big shots[and i mean a couple].Peter through 2 or 3 combos the hole match, witch also looked silly. Tony was throwing combos and the jab was AWSOME. PETER could not get out of the way of that jab.Tony has to keep on doing what he does, and boxing needs to clean up the judges. These people are ruining boxing, and just keep letting us fans down.

Such a blatant robbery. I think I’m through watching boxing. Honestly. This isn’t a sport anymore. I’m tired of having my intelligence insulted by rigged decisions.

Like Toney or not he was robbed! If Showtime kept punch stats it have shown Toney a clear winner. If boxing doesn’t get a hold of it’s own corruption within the sport is doomed…

Since Taylor beat Hopkins I have been thinking of how fighters could be so blatantly robbed and have come to only one conclusion. Money! Toney is much older and has one a fight or two left in him. Peter, much younger, has a good ten or 15 fights to go. HBO and Showtime stand to make much more money with Peter so why not give him the fight. How else can you justify 116-111.

I thought the fight was pretty close giving Toney the fight. I disagree with Andrews comment about neither man was hurt in the fight. Toney was clearly hurt early and late by some of Peters bombs. But Peter, being nothing more than a big strong unschooled guy couldn’t follow up. Yet Toneys jab and 1-2 combos seemed to control the fight. The fact that Toney can not only compete with and dominate just about all the heaveyweights shows you how really bad the heaveyweight division is. Can you imagine Toney in a division with The Greatest, a young Foreman, Frazier, Holmes, Norton, Quarry, Chavalo, etc. These guys have one thing that todays heaveyweights don’t have; HEART!!! And thats why Toney able to dominate today heavys. They don’t have his heart, skills, and determination. I like Toney and i hope to see him continue to show up theses so-called heavyweight ” champions” despite being fat and out-of-shape.

This time Samuel Peters will knock Tony’s former middleweight buttocks into next week. It’s time for that arrogant, over-rated fat-boy to retire.
