Cotto, Margarito Punish Foes

Sunday April 13, 2008
Undefeated Miguel Cotto (32-0) overwhelmed The Contender's Alfonso Gomez (18-4-2) over five one-sided rounds to retain his WBA welterweight title. While Gomez was decked three times, he never quit - despite being completely overmatched in every way. Cotto treated Gomez like a sparring partner and displayed an arrogance that has not been apparent in past fights. After the fifth round, the ring doctor wisely advised the referee to stop the fight before Gomez absorbed any further punishment.

In the co-feature, Antonio Margarito (36-5) took one round longer to stop Kermit Cintron (29-2) than when the two first met in 2005. Cintron is heavy-handed but once again could not handle the non-stop pressure applied by Margarito. With each passing round, it became clear that is was only a matter of time before Margarito broke Cintron down. The end came with a wicked left to the body that sent Cintron down for the count. The win gives Margarito the IBF welterweight title.

The fight everyone wants to see is a welterweight unification bout between Cotto and pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr.. Everyone, that is, except Mayweather himself. Unless Mayweather has a change of heart, fight fans may have to settle for a welterweight unification bout between Cotto and Antonio Margarito. Not a bad consolation prize at all . . .

Mayweather will never fight both cotto and margarito fighting both of them will be too risky to his unblemished record. Cotto and Margarito are two fighters made for each other, I believe theirs will be a very interesting fight and might spark a great rivalry, I believe its mayweathers every intention to retire not fighting the top dawgs in the welterweight division because lets face it he could never knock out Cotto or Margarito. He could probably outpoint them just like what he did with DLH and bore everyone to death but if he were to slug it out with these 2 fighters he would inevitably kiss the canvas, he hasn’t knocked out any significant welterweight fighter with the exception of Ricky Hatton which lets face it really belongs to the 140 lb division.

I can’t agree with you more. Hatton is not a 147, that;s why Mayweather KO him, remember that he loose to Collazo and they gave him the victory. Mayweather doesn’t want to fight guys like Margarito and Cotto, he knows in his heart he is a coward!!!

Mayweather will not fight Cotto cuz he knowz he has no chance. He gonna fight Del La Hoya again in september and maybe 2009 March he will fight Hatton again at wembley which has a capacity of 80 000 at football matches. So at Boxing they probly fit 100 000+ thats why mayweather will fight him again. Cuz of the $$$

(9) Donald Wolberg says:

Cotto brings it all to a fight. He is simply relentless and bangs with more authority than anyone pound for pound. He will beat Margarito because he is much stronger, and he has much improved boxing skills. Yes, the Cotto-Margarito
fight will be exciting, as long as it lasts, but I can’t see anyone standing against Cotto, who is just reaching his peak. Mayweather is not going to fight Cotto and risk a loss or physical damage.

I can’t see Mayweather risking anything at this stage in his supposed career–he would do Oscar for the big money and likely win. Oscar is probably more concerened about his image especially after all those pictures that were less than “macho” and wants to do something to look like a warrior again. Cotto is just too much for Mayweather and would hurt his face, something that worries Mayweather a lot. Cotto is very impressive and gets better and better; a truly great fighter.

Cintron seemed awkward, never on his game plan and seriously outclassed. He is lucky not to have been badly hurt.

Sorry my mexican boxing fans but the truth of the matter is Cotto will dismantle “el tornado” by the 10th rounds via body shots.Dont get it twisted it wont be easy but if Cotto boxes/brawls the way he did against SSM this fight will be over by the 10th.Margarito is a good tough boxer but come on people he barely out pointed a smaller Clottey w/a broken hand and he is supposed to do what against the much fiercer Cotto!? Good fight but Cotto via Tko 10th round…..

Dear Floyd,
Man i truely believe that you are the most well rounded boxer in boxing today but for Christ sake man how much more of your Shinanigans do us boxing fans have to put up with? Dude ,if you say your the greatest then step up to the plate and start putting your money where your mouth is and get it done!!!
