Poll: Hopkins vs. Calzaghe. Who Will Win?

Friday April 18, 2008
On Saturday night, undefeated super middleweight champ Joe Calzaghe will be fighting in the United States for the first time when he moves up to light heavyweight (for the first time in over a decade) to take on future Hall of Famer Bernard Hopkins. The 12-round fight will be broadcast live on HBO (not PPV!) at 9:45pm ET.

Oddsmakers favor Calzaghe, 36, over the 43-year-old Hopkins at between 5-2 and 3-1 -- a surprisingly wide margin given how good Hopkins looked in defeating Winky Wright and Antonio Tarver in his two most recent outings. While this is clearly the biggest fight of Calzaghe's career, he was at his best in the two biggest fights of his career to date: lopsided decision victories over previously undefeated Jeff Lacy in 2006 and Mikkel Kessler in 2007.

Prediction: No one ever looks great against Hopkins and he will undoubtedly attempt to rough up Calzaghe, who has already voiced concern over possible head butts and low blows. Calzaghe will have to be strong mentally as he will not only have to deal with Hopkins, but also with a crowd that will not be entirely in his corner. The bet here is that Calzaghe is up for the challenge. Hopkins will make the fight ugly and hard to score, but Calzaghe will simply be busier and win rounds by outworking his older foe. This one is going the full 12 rounds with no knockdowns. Calzaghe by close unanimous decision ... though Hopkins will say he was robbed.

Who do you think will win? Calzaghe or Hopkins? Vote in our poll.

Hopkins brings skill and determination that usually means he does anything to win. Calzaghe is strong, fast and skilled and will keep Hopkins off balance by his volume of punches and movement. I have to go with the odds makers and pick Calzaghe by a decision. It will not be pretty, but it will be enough.

Joe needs to be busy from the get go. Despite Hopkins age he knows how dictate the pace of a fight so seldom appears tired. If Joe can cope with Hopkins rough house low blows and shoulder buffeting he should be able to gain a narrow points decision.

my head says calzaghe is too strong, too fast but my heart says that the old bugger will have something up his sleeve. Besides Kesler has calzaghe ever really been tested?

I’ll have to go with Bernard because of skills.Calzaghes conditioning is good but still throws flailing punches when tring to finish an opponent.Bernard has self control in his corner and I hop the referee is like Mills Lane.

Am I the only one that watched Hopkins last 2 fights. He did look good against a lethargic Tarver but he looked horrible sloppy and out of shape when he fought Winky (and sorry to everyone in the boxing world but Winky may actually be overrated.) Hopkins tactics can be hard to overcome but I am gonna go with a different prediction that everyone else; I think Calzaghe will expose Hopkins and will win by KO or TKO under 10 rounds or maybe even earlier. I think Hopkins has done a good job of selling himself, but Joe is going to dominate him and win easy. Hopefully it does end in stoppage or people may have to suffer thru more of Bhop fights.

Calzaghes’punches won’t have enough power to keep the experienced Hopkins off of him. Once Hopkins sees Calzaghe can’t hurt him he’ll knock him out

ya’ll dun doubted ma man Hopkins from day 1..Hopkins wasn’t suppose to beat Trinidad,Tarver,Winky and the list goes on..he aint gonna be beat by a white british man, who has Calzaghe beat?? Lacy, plz he had 17 fights then. Hopkins has over 50 fights against much higher compition than Calzaghe..Hopkins will do all he can and that will be enough to win. ya’ll should know by now not to doubt ma man Bernard!.

Nah Nah Nah Hold Up!!…Bernard Hopkins..To Win By Either Ko.Or Unanimous Decision..Purely Because The Man Has To Much Strength For The Smaller Calzaghe!.Bernard Will Throw Them Fast If Not Faster The Calzaghe Will..The Guy Has Beat Winky Wright,Trinidad,De La Hoya And Tarver…The Winner To Fight Roy Jones Then For Jones To Announce Hes Retirement As The Best There Was And The Best There Ever Will be!
