Poll: Cotto vs. Margarito. Who Will Win?

Wednesday July 23, 2008
If you love boxing, this weekend offers one of the few pay-per-view events that's almost guaranteed to deliver value for your entertainment dollar. Miguel Cotto (32-0, 26 KOs) is the top welterweight in the world, is never in a boring fight and seemingly keeps getting better. Antonio Margarito (36-5, 26 KOs) has been among the top welterweights in the world for the past eight years, throws a huge number of punches in every round and looked fantastic in stopping Kermit Cintron in six rounds in his last outing. Cotto has never lost. Margarito has never been knocked out. Both men like to fight on the inside and - perhaps most importantly - both are offensive-minded. In other words, they're primarily concerned with dishing out punishment. If they have to absorb some shots along the way, so be it.

As far as matchmaking goes, Cotto-Margarito is in a class with Rafael Marquez-Israel Vazquez as a can't miss thriller. Bettors clearly favor Cotto - he's risen from an 8-5 favorite to nearly 3-1 - but wagering against Margarito might not be a good idea. While Cotto, 27, is the younger man by three years, Margarito is four inches taller and has a six-inch reach advantage. Cotto had some difficulty edging Shane Mosley in his toughest fight to date and Margarito is both more aggressive and physically larger than Mosley.

The only negative - in what has become typical of PPV cards these days - is that all the value is in the main event. The undercard is underwhelming at best:
Junior flyweights: Giovanni Segura (19-0-1) vs. Cesar Canchila (26-1)
Junior welterweights: Michael Alvarado (21-0) vs. Cesar Bazan (48-10-1)
Junior featherweights: Bernabe Concepcion (25-1-1) vs. Adam Carrera (19-3)

Who do you think will win? Cotto or Margarito? Vote in our poll.

Margarito is going to “shock the experts” but not himself. He’ll wear down the smaller Cotto and finish him off with a vicious uppercut in the mid to late rounds to win by KO! Cotto is undefeated yes…but he’s never faced anyone even close to Margarito. Don’t give me the over-the-hill Mosley or the 5′6″ Judah. Those are “name wins” at best. He beat guys who you guys (the experts?) said were good wins. I don’t see it that way. Hey, any win is good but neither of those tell me anything about how Cotto is going to do against the bigger, stronger, nastier Margarito. Yes, he’s slower but he will get through to Cotto’s body and chin. After some wearing down, he’ll land a clean uppercut to Cotto that he’s never felt and it will be “lights out”!

Junior makes some interesting observations, but I can’t agree. Cotto has just gotten too good, better and better afdter every fight and he is just relentless. I thought Shayne fought him ot a draw, and Shayne was at his best for the fight, but Cotto has just improved too much since then. he is at the top of his form and devestating. I see a Cotto win in 8. But, it is a shame this is PPV. Too many fights are going that way and I think the sport is damaging itself in the long haul. The choice now is between gasoling and PPV and people need the gas more.

Both Cotto and Margarito looked awesome in their last bouts. However, Margarito faced Kermit, who is a much much better fighter than Gomez and even a harder puncher than the same Cotto. Cotto faced Gomez, a moderate quality (should I say mediocre?) fighter who gave no more than a sparring session to Cotto. Cotto looked good against him displaying a lot of skill, I don’t doubt he has skills, He does a lot, but quite frankly any good fighter in his prime would look awesome against Gomez. Margarito besides being strong and nasty fighter is much bigger than Cotto, a very difficult task for Cotto no matter how much he has improved. I am going with the old and wise saying: in a fight between to great fighters the biggest one comes out victorious. Margarito will kill Cotto in mid-late fight.

I think that Cotto will win by decision and Margarito will win by KO. It is only going to go that route.

(5) Jose Adames says:

I find it hard to predict who will win this fight. Both are exceptionally great fighters. I just hope that neither fighter leaves their fight in the gym the day of the fight due to over-training.Cotto is the smaller fighter who is an impressive body puncher who has never tasted defeat. Sounds a little like Rocky Marciano. On the other hand, Margarito is the taller fighter, with more ring experience than Cotto. In spite of the fact that he has 5 losses in his record should not be a determining factor since Margarito has faced more formidable oppenents. In the end, it will be a question of will, skill and determination.Regardless of who wins, both fighters will make a lot of money. They will fight each other in countless rematches and rubber matches. They will fight each other again, again, and again. An they will become richer again, again , and again. HBO. Showtime and Pay-Per-View will make millions, too. Everyone will be happier and richer, too.’Nuff said!

Cotto and Margarito are 2 good boxers. They believe that they can wipe out each opponent they face. It is going to be a battle of two brave warriors. But in this battle, Im picking up Cotto to win by decision, a very close decision.

(10) Lu says:

AlbertR and Carlito, You guys are both idiots, it’s clearly going to be a good fight but it is obvious that Margarito is going to win the fight and I wouldn’t be suprised if he wins by KO. Both of you idiots don’t know what you are talking about, clearly you know nothing about boxing !

(11) sinneD Bleed says:

I would like to comment to a person named Junior who show off’s Margarito winning the fight against Cotto. Hey man, Margarito doesn’t stand a chance to Cotto. Look what happen to him in his fight to Paul Williams, and Im sure Cotto is much stronger than Wiliams. Margarito is only best when he fights a low key fighter, like Citron, hell, Citron is s**t. But Cotto, is different, a way to much for Margarito. Look for Margarito to come to down. Margarito will be spank in the ass!

(12) Carlo Bonfante says:

Im Italian.. . Not puerto Rican or Mexican, but there is no way how Cotto will TKO Margarito.
I think Margarito will TKO Cotto on the 9th or 10th. period.

Lu,

I suppose you’re a World Champion???? Right?? All of you, come back to the forum tomorrow and I’ll be saying: “I told you…”

(14) Tony C says:

It is clear that this will be a great fight. There is no way anyone can be sure of who will win. There is something that is very clear, in boxing 9 time out 10 the most experienced and longer reaching boxing tends to win. Therefore the pick is obvious if your a gambler you pick Margarito. You are certain he will give it to Cotto and you get the better odds. Not to mention: Even though Margarito is a bit slower he will only need to connect two solid punches and Cotto is looking for ten; aside from trying to land body shots to “try” and remove Margarito’s legs because he will keep coming forward.

(17) The Big Ragu says:

People had all sorts of different predictions and some were way off but none could be more off the wall then sinneD Bleed’s prediction. We can’t take anything away from Cotto he fought hard and even when he was in trouble he kept punching and was still dangerous, maybe it was pure instinct. Margarito simply was stronger and much bigger, his punches were devastating and as the rounds went by he broke Cotto down. Cotto’s punches never hurt Margarito, Margarito has a chin of steel. Those of us who have followed Margarito’s career knew we would win this fight.

I love reading there predictions after the fact. My eye first caught Junior’s post, and he called it… to the tee. Great job, Junior!
