After recently bemoaning the fact that many compelling match-ups never seem to come to fruition, it seems only fair that we also focus on all the good, or at least interesting, fights that are being made.
However, after culling through the latest schedule of upcoming fights, it's difficult to come up with any more than eight fights in the next two months which will command the collective attention of even hardcore fans of the increasingly bittersweet science. Two fights are truly significant because they pit the best fighters at their respective weights defending against worthy, undefeated challengers: Lewis-Grant and De La Hoya-Mosley. Three others are noteworthy because they involve Hall-of-Fame fighters: Holyfield, Jones and Hopkins. Two others are mildly intriguing because they showcase fringe contenders looking to climb into the championship picture in the heavyweight division. Finally, one bout is included because, regardless of who he fights or how badly his skills have deteriorated, Mike Tyson remains the single biggest draw in the sport. So, without further adieu, here are the upcoming bouts that are worth watching (or at least taping), as well a quick prediction on which fighter will emerge victorious in each fight. Remember, as always, all fights (especially Tyson fights) are subject to change, if not outright cancellation:
Saturday, April 29: WBC/IBF heavyweight title: Lennox Lewis (36-1-1, 28 KOs) vs. Michael Grant (31-1, 22 KOs)
Saturday, May 13: WBA/WBC/IBF light heavyweight titles: Roy Jones Jr. (42-1, 34 KOs) vs. Richard Hall (24-2, 23 KOs)
Saturday, May 13: IBF middleweight title: Bernard Hopkins (37-2-1-1, 27 KOs) vs. Syd Vanderpool (27-2, 18 KOs)
Saturday, May 20: heavyweights: Derrick Jefferson (22-1-1, 18 KOs) vs. Oleg Maskaev (28-2, 19 KOs)
Saturday, May 20: heavyweights: Corrie Sanders (36-1, 26 KOs) vs. Hasim Rahman (32-2, 26 KOs)
Saturday, June 10: WBA heavyweight title: Evander Holyfield (36-4-1, 25 KOs) vs. John Ruiz (35-3, 26 KOS)
Saturday, June 17: WBC welterweight title: Oscar De La Hoya (32-1, 26 KOs) vs. Shane Mosley (34-0, 32 KOs)
Saturday, June 24: heavyweights: Mike Tyson (47-3-1, 41 KOs) vs. Lou Savarese (39-3, 32 KOs) Not bad, but nothing compared to a boxing fan's wish list of dream fights.
