Former champ and fan favorite Arturo Gatti was found dead in his room at a seaside hotel in Porto de Galihnas, Brazil on July 11, 2009. Gatti, 37, had arrived at the resort the previous day with his Brazilian wife and 1-year-old son. Gatti's wife, 23-year-old Amanda Rodrigues, was initially jailed (though never formally charged with any crime) as the only suspect in the case.

Gatti Death Ruled Suicide; Wife Released

The Arturo Gatti case has taken another unexpected turn with his death - originally considered a homicide - now ruled a suicide and his wife - originally jailed as the only suspect in the case - now released from prison in Brazil.

What exactly changed? It's hard to say. The lead investigator, Paulo Alberes, could only confirm that police had determined the case was a suicide but offered no new details. The judge who ordered the release of Gatti's wife, Ildete Verissimo de Lima, went as far as to write that the investigation "excludes the possibility of murder".

Really? So this case went from murder as the only possible explanation to excluding even the possibility of murder?

Gatti's wife, Amanda Rodrigues, believes the former champ may have been suicidal because he was afraid she was going to leave him. The couple engaged in a loud, public argument the night before Gatti was found dead.

It appears as if fight fans may never learn what really happened in Gatti's hotel room in Porto de Galinhas, Brazil on July 11. If Amanda Rodrigues is truly innocent, then justice was done when she walked out of prison as a free woman. If not, then the 23-year-old former stripper just got away with murder.

According to a Brazilian newspaper, which claims to have obtained a copy of the coroner's initial findings, an autopsy indicates Arturo Gatti may have committed suicide ... or may have been accidentally killed ... or may have been murdered. So much for the autopsy helping to clear things up.

Every new piece of information on this case raises more questions, with the police investigation, autopsy report and Rodrigues all putting forth conflicting accounts of what may have actually transpired.

The body of Arturo Gatti is being returned from Brazil for a funeral to be held in a church in the Little Italy section of Montreal. An autopsy report will be released within the next few days.

That much seems to be fact. Everything else about the death of Gatti remains shrouded in mystery and confusion.

See what Gatti's 23-year-old wife, Amanda Rodrigues, has to say about the death of her husband. For what it's worth, Gatti met Rodrigues at the New York City strip club Scores and friends report that that the couple fought frequently.
