Junior welterweight Victor Ortiz (24-1-1) stunned Mike Arnaoutis (21-3-1) with a big left and then unleashed a barrage of 14 unanswered shots until the fight was stopped at 1:27 of the second round. The stoppage may have been a bit premature but Arnaoutis didn't put up much of an argument. The bout represented the biggest test in the professional career of Ortiz and the 22-year-old passed with flying colors.
An unintentional clash of heads opened up a nasty gash over the right eye of junior lightweight Robert Guerrero (23-1-1) 59 seconds into the second round of his bout with Daud Yordan (17-0). When the referee stopped the action 48 seconds later to let the ring doctor have a look at the cut, Guerrero said he could not see out of his right eye. The doctor seemed skeptical but Guerrero really left him no choice but to stop the fight. Since four rounds were not yet completed, the fight was declared a no decision. Had the fight been stopped after four complete rounds, the fight would have gone to the scorecards. Guerrero probably could have fought on but appeared to elect to take the no decision rather than risk continuing to fight with the cut. The decision was probably the correct one from a business standpoint but it didn't win Guerrero any new fans.
