Here's the format. Points will awarded as follows in each of three Group Stages:
3 points for a KO/TKO victory
2 points for a decision win
1 point for a draw
0 points for a loss
The four fighters with the highest point totals after the three Group Stages are complete will advance to a single-elimination Semi-Finals. The winners of the Semi-Final fights will advance to the Finals.
Here are the matchups for Group Stages:
GROUP STAGE 1 (2009)
Arthur Abraham vs. Jermain Taylor
Carl Froch vs. Andre Dirrell
Mikkel Kessler vs. Andre Ward
GROUP STAGE 2 (2010)
Andre Dirrell vs. Arthur Abraham
Mikkel Kessler vs. Carl Froch
Jermain Taylor vs. Andre Ward
GROUP STAGE 3 (2010)
Andre Dirrell vs. Andre Ward
Carl Froch vs. Arthur Abraham
Mikkel Kessler vs. Jermain Taylor
While Lucian Bute, Librado Andrade and Allan Green might disagree, these are the six fighters who belong in this tournament ... and all the possible matchups are intriguing. There are three Americans and three Europeans. There are two current super middleweight titlists (Froch and Kessler), two former middleweight champs (Abraham and Taylor) and two undefeated Olympic medalists (Ward and Dirrell).
Heading into the tournament, the combined record of the Super Six is a stellar 163-4-1.
The plan is great ... but boxing rarely goes according to plan. Let's hope this tournament is the exception . . .
