Review: Contender Episode 13
Sunday May 15, 2005
Episode 13 of "The Contender" reduced the field of fighters still in contention for the $1 million jackpot to four: Peter Manfredo Jr., Alfonso Gomez, Sergio Mora and Jesse Brinkley. Two things changed this week. No challenge -- the fighters would have to decide amongst themselves who would fight who in the semi-finals. Plus, both semi-final bouts would be seven rounds as opposed to the five that had been the standard thus far in the tournament. The fighters quickly agreed that the semis would begin with a rematch between Manfredo and Gomez. Gomez got the better of Manfredo in the first episode but Manfredo was voted back in episode four to replace Jeff Fraza, who came down with the chicken pox. This fight was just as competitive as their first meeting, only this time Manfredo was a bit sharper and landed the more effective punches, earning a unanimous decision. Next week: Sergio Mora vs. Jesse Brinkley to determine who fights Manfredo in Las Vegas for the $1 miilion prize. The final bout will be televised live on Tuesday, May 24.
