Agapito Sanchez Dies of Gunshot Wound

By November 16, 2005

Follow me on:

Former champ Agapito Sanchez, 35, died at a Santo Domingo hospital following surgery to remove two bullets from his stomach. Two days earlier, a Dominican air force sergeant opened fire on Sanchez after being refused permission to dance with his girlfriend at a bar. The sergeant, who was chased and beaten up by the boxer's friends, is under arrest at a military hospital. Sanchez's final fight was less than two months ago -- a 10-round decision over Edinso Torres on Sept. 17. The former WBO super bantamweight champ had a career record of 36-11-3 with 18 KOs, including fights with Marco Antonio Barrera, Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny Pacquiao.

(7) Chula says:

Whoever writes that Agapito was a dirty boxer has obviously never fought themselves. Yes, he would do anything to win a fight, but so would all champions. He came from nothing except a loving family. Beside that it was the sugar cane fields or prison. He made his way to becoming champion of the world through discipline and courage. Anyone who can say the same would never write anything so disrespectful about him, He was a beautiful person and a wonderful father to 3 boys. How dare you say he had it coming when now those kids have no father? You are obviously an ignorant, cold, and stupid thing… You don’t even deserve to be on the same earth that Agapito was on. RIP Ciclon.

I’m sorry to say but Agapito Sanchez is the dirtiest fighter i’ve ever seen in boxing. He doesn’t even deserve to be a boxer.Perhaps he was shot because he is even dirty outside the ring, there’s no wonder why people would hate him.

Chula says “Yes, he would do anything to win a fight, but so would all champions.” Would do anything to win, even cheat? all world champions? How about Paquiao? He’s a champion too. did he cheat? He fought will all the blood and cuts on his face courtesy of your great friend Sanchez. And no, he didn’t backed down, he fought against a dirty champion fighter who should have been disqualified as early as round 4.

And talk about humble beginnings. Well for one thing, Paquiao has to roam the streets of gensan to earn to help his mother. They barely had something to eat. Perhaps you can research something about him. And maybe he got to be a champion thru discipline and courage, and courage to headbut, fire a low blow now and then.

He’s an above average boxer, He has skills. He’s fast. But he has a fatal character flaw. The moment he feels he might not win, he prefers to DO ANYTHING to win, Thats it.

He may be a great father as they say, a great friend, you might add, BUT when worse comes to worst he resorts to dubious methods to win. And that is a fatal flaw in his character. Maybe the officer shot him because he said other things beside refusing. Who knows? Maybe The off duty-duty police officer (seargent) didn’t like his remarks, or he just met someone like him who wouldn’t take no for an answer, and likes to ‘win’ too, the same way the ‘champion’ sanchez likes to win. Too bad the officer has a gun. Well, thats Karma.

(16) Ace says:

to leop23 and ralph. Both of you must be incredibly insensitive to the value of human life, especially you, leop to attempt to justify Sanchez’s murder based on his boxing ability.

If you knew anything about the police in the Dominican Republic, you wouldn’t twiddle your fingers to propel your insolent drovel. Besides being an above-average boxer, like you admitted; he was a human being, and like any other human being, did not deserve to be shot like a dog, especially because a horny cop didn’t get what he wanted.

Would you like it if that was your brother who got shot? Or your mother for turning down the dance?

My point exactly.

(22) balita says:

Sanchez’s fight against Pacquiao was widely criticized because Sanchez violated the basic rules of boxing. He did not deserve to be shot for petty reasons. He could have retired in boxing and made some reformation for himself.

(23) boxing ruler says:

Whatever good things Sanchez might have done outside the ring, the fact remains that he used all he broke all the rules in boxing to try to win against Pacquiao. A lot of people don’t know him other than he is so-so boxer who is the dirtiest fighter many have ever seen.

(27) James Hondrado says:

Sanchez a dirty fighter. Dirty, dirty fighter. Dirty fighter.

You Areal king? To you he was good but can not take the fact that he was a dirty fighter. Fact showed.

Manny did not want to fight him again because he was a very, very dirty fighter.

You Arelis Titi, if you were Manny fighting him that night, what will you say of Agap? Will you say he was a good boxer?

And you Leop 23, will you say Sanchez a good fighter if you were Manny fighting him? You too, SAB? Be in Pacquiao’s self. You fought him. He shove you, headbutted you, hit you low blow, and can you say, Oh, Sanchez’s a good man , a good boxer? This includes Chulah.

You Chula, SAB, Leop 23, Arelis, Areal King, you blind people. Can not know the tail from the head. If you were a boxer, you will call headbutt, low blow, and shoving to the canvass a good boxing techniques.

But Sanchez is dead. We forgive his mistakes. But to say he is a good boxer is outright a lie.

Come on you guys. Do not depend a sinful boxer but we can forgive.

But Sanchez remains a dirty fighter.

So… he will be remembered as a dirty fighter in the ring… and a great man outside the ring… two different topics for two different viewers! Though it is sad to have such a reputation.
