First Two Contenders Sent Home

Thursday July 20, 2006
In episode one of "The Contender: Season Two", welterweight Cornelius Bundrage (22-1) won a majority decision over former title challenger Michael Clark (35-4). The fight was even through four rounds, but Bundrage dropped Clark with a big right hand midway through the fifth and final round to earn the decision. Also, Norberto Bravo (21-10-3) took a split decision over Rudy Cisneros (8-2). Cisneros had to drop a few pounds to make weight and that may have hurt him as Bravo came on strong late to win a split decision: 49-46, 49-46 Bravo and 48-47 Cisneros.

Good news for fight fans: The show has done away with the silly challenges and put added emphasis on the actual boxing. Great a novel concept for a "boxing" reality show! Another change: Sugar Ray Leonard is now front and center as host. No more Sylvester Stallone pretending to understand what it takes to get in the ring and get hit with real punches.

being in Australia we only just got the first episode of contender… a week’s delay but it is damn good to see more boxing and less of the challenge crap and no Sly! K9 surprised me with his win… didn’t expect the big talking, slick punching clark to be offed straight away (and i’m betting neither did the producers! All in all it’s looking like a good series. Now i’ve just got to stay away from the results until next week!

I agree. It’s nice not seeing Sly. Hate the teaser he made wherein he was sparring with I think Ray (can’t remember). I want to go out and shoot myself everytime I see that.
I guess they edit the scenes well to draw in more audience who are not that familiar with boxing.
One thing I’m anticipating is that whoever wins Contender II get to fight with The Latin Snake. It would be quite an event!

We loved that Bravo won, but you never showed his prize like all the other winners. Please let us know what he got.
