Mayweather Cruises Past Baldomir

From Andrew Eisele, About.com GuideNovember 4, 2006

Follow me on:

Round-by-Round Report
Floyd Mayweather Jr. takes the first two rounds ... too fast for Carlos Baldomir. More of the same in round three ... Baldomir appears a bit frustrated. Ditto round four ... Baldomir has a good chin and it's getting tested. Mayweather scores at will in round five ... very one-sided. Baldomir a bit more aggressive in round six ... but it's another round for Floyd: 6-0. Round seven to Mayweather ... Baldomir's only shot might be if Floyd breaks a hand cracking Baldomir in the head. Baldomir tries to turn it into a brawl in round eight but unable to land anything effective. Floyd pitching a shutout through nine ... crowd is silent. Mayweather perfect through ten and content to go to the scorecards. HBO-PPV announcing team criticizes him for not trying to take Baldomir out and give the fans a show. Baldomir chases Mayweather around the ring in round eleven but never finds the target. Mayweather dances the 12th round away and - if you're feeling generous - you could give the round to Baldomir. There are more boos than cheers from the crowd as the final bell sounds.

No surprise as the final scores read 120-108, 120-108 and 118-110 - all for Mayweather. Punch stats have Mayweather landing 199 of 458 (43%) to 79 of 670 (12%) for Baldomir.

Mayweather is a boxer not fighter Jose Luis Castillo beat his ass no doubt, he is running away from all the fighters that can punch he is not nothing but but a chicken as far as I’m concern, He shouldn’t be undefeated after the Castillo fights and he knows it, he should fight like a man and not run too much

Oh please give me a break guy mw.jr is the best pound for pound fighter out there. i’m tired of people like you not giving him his props what more does he has to do for you to shut you mouth? He beat everyone he faced and i’m sure thats not gonna change no matter whos ass he whips. and another thing that bother me about your comment you said he’s a boxer not a fighter um duh what is the sport called again? It’s not the ufc or wwe

If mayweather was the best P4P out there why didn’t he give a chance to Margarito instead of Baldomir MW Jr. knows he can loose the belt against Margarito and he afraid of him.

(6) Millertime says:

Hello Mr. “power puncher”

The point to boxing is to hit the other guy, and not get hit in return. Few fighters and fewer fight fans understand the science. Personally I’d like to see Floyd take more of a risk by going toe to toe with all opponents and punctuate his fights with knockouts. But taking too many shots to the head, or as you put it, “fight like a man and not run too much” isn’t a good thing to do unless you want to end up with brain damage like Muhammad Ali, Jerry Quarry,Terry Norris, etc. Bottom Line is
when it comes to the “Sweet Science”, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is a Professor. This guy is invincible! It’s clear that he’s in a league of his own. The fight with Gatti proved that. Even boxers in higher weight classes are taking notice. I still can’t believe Oscar De la Hoya wants to fight Floyd.

(7) number one boxer says:

Look, you all can talk about Hoya and Sugar Shane talkin about wanting to get into the ring with Mayweather all you want. Its not going to happen! Not unless there is massive money in count. Hoya and Shane are old crusty boxers. Period! Shane thinks just cuz he had some “comeback” fight against another old crusty fighter that he is good??? He sucks! Neither of them want to fight him. Why would Shane and Hoya, which just hardly revived there records, fight a star and a winner like Mayweather? And with the fight last night, YAWWWNNNNNN! Mayweather is a bore to watch. I feel sorry for all you’s out there that payed money to see that dance last night. Mayweather is a little girl when it comes to someone that is bigger and stronger than him. Period! He is a great boxer and I take nothing away from that. But he is not a fighter. He has no heart when it comes to trying to “knock a ** out” like he so says.

I think Floyde is the best, he’s aware of the danger so he protect himself & damage his opponant. If he keep it that way he’s going to enjoyed his money in the futhure.

(9) nic says:

i like mayweather jr, but yes he did get beat by a certain castillo. i bet money on mayweather and did not collect payment on castillo fight, what, floyd won 2 rds maybe anyway p4p he is one of the best but there is a certain fighter from peurto rico who i think if mayweather wanted to prove anything he would accept a few lefts to his ribs and see how elusive he is by the way i have no predictions for the fight but would pay to see it baldomir, zab and gatti are seriously nobodys in the world of pound 4 pound bests floyd do not turn into a roy we know you like the money but you are rich now, so fight someone anyone with common sense would pay to see a fight, not a one sided ass beating that the bookies knew it would be all sports are starting to suck it is all about the gambling and payout losers

(10) bklynell says:

I guess that’s why they call it the sweet science. As far as Castillo dont be fooled. Its good to shoe shine, but in boxing in order to win you have to hit someone.
Good show for Castillo, but he did not connect. How do you win a boxing match without connecting.
Brawling and corralling someone to the ropes in an attempt to pound them does not equal clear and effective aggression.
Folks talk about the the pugilist sport of boxing and its evident that you knowledge of the sport is not that great.
Why fight an unknown like Margarito, with 4 losses, make him more noted when it is indeed not the money fight?
Who has Margarito fought to align himself with the Pretty Boy?
Unlike Roy Jones, Jr, PBF has not taken time off from the ring to pursue anything else and has not had ring rust.
As in any sport the more time you take off the more rusty you become.
Now come on give the man his props. Have you ever been in a fist fight? Were you ever able to hit without being hit? Did you take the time to even learn the sweet science?
I guess not or you would have more respect for the fighters who risk their lives every time they step in the ring.
Later….

Mayweather is the Muhammad Ali of this day and his division. He has mastered the art of the sweet science (hit and not be hit). His connect rate is unmatchable. His ring generalship, ability to bait the opponent into a trap and alertness is second to none.

He busted this guy up bad in the first 3 minutes of the fight. And if you go back and look and listened to the damage that he executed, you will see and hear that he may have severely damaged his hand while damaging the other guys jaw (the guy has a rugged, cement like skull).

Again, Mayweather is a boxing scientist who is the Muhammad Ali of his day.

De La Hoya, Margarito.. whoever!

They cannot match his will or his skill.

I missed the fight this weekend but every time Floyd steps in the ring he leaves it with a victory so what’s new. He is the BEST boxer ever and people need to realize the truth. He could lose to Paul”The Punisher”Williams but that guy is huge so theres his excuse(as if he really would need one). Bottom line is noone comes close to this guy in any fight he’s been in and it will never change.

(13) Craig says:

There are many strong but marginally talented boxers who can brawl their way to prominence, or even titles (Lennox Lewis anyone?) but there is no art, no “Sweet Science” in what they do. Floyd is one of those rare talents who can take it to another level. Their speed, balance, agility, poise, and real understanding of boxing raise it to something magical – a fusion of art and intellect with sport. Last Saturday Floyd did precisely what was needed of him, and he did it masterfully. He was widely criticized for not pursuing a knockout, but why should he? Baldomir was completely incapable of hitting him unless Floyd did something stupid, and Floyd never does anything stupid. Why, when you have a fight won, should you dance close to a bigger man? That makes no sense. Floyd’s performance was a triumph of discipline over passion. The ability to think while he fights is one of the things that sets him apart. Perhaps he’s not as much fun to watch as some “Rocky Balboa” wannabe, but I know that I will remember his completely mastery of the sport.

As to the best ever – as much as I love Floyd, I believe he stands behind Sugar Ray Robinson, Archie Moore, Mohammed Ali, and probably Tiger Flowers, though I have seen Flowers only in film.

(15) Benzino says:

With 37 wins(24 KO) and the fact that he’s NEVER even been in any trouble in a single bout(no matter the weight), I believe we are most definately witnessing the greatest the sport has ever seen. Separates himself from his competition more than any boxer I can think of. Maybe Hagler comes close but even he had problems vs Sugar Ray(he still got robbed though). Might be too early too call him the best? When he destroys De La Hoya for trying to get his dad in his corner will you then???

(16) bissett_tko says:

Hey nic and power puncher: If you guys actually believe that Floyd lost EITHER of the Castillo fights, you do not need to be talking about boxing to anyone. If you do not recognize that Floyd Matweather is the best fighter on the planet, then you don’t know about boxing and you need to go watch UFC or something. Mayweather is an artist, and he has painted everyone he has faced and has never even had a competitive fight. No one at 147 is going to beat him within the next few years, so if you don’t like him, too bad, no one can beat him.

(17) dced says:

hey, if you claim to be the best pound for pound fighter in the world, you have to dominate a fighter, which means taking him out. you should fight like a venture capitalist, not like a municipal bond investor.

(19) hater says:

if mayweather retires after next fight it would be a big mistake. He has just recently even hit the big time, now after finally making it he is gonna leave. After fighting an aging De La Hoya, who may just beat him. Why not stay around and dominate, unless he doesn’t think he can. Should also fight someone who can actually punch hard and box. Oh wait, thats De La Hoya. Won’t be pretty when the Golden Boy drops him in 8.

(20) hater says:

having not read what others wrote b4 posting I must post again. Best fighter of all time?? Are u joking?? Of his time, perhaps. Of the year, maybe. Of all time, don’t be silly!! He has a great record, but he ducks the best in his weight class. Great fighter, but in no way iconic or even memorable. Sugar Ray Robinson, Willie Pep, Muhammed Ali, Julio Cesar Chavez these are great warriors. Bring on all comers, and they’ll put them down. Not run and hide, or retire rather than face the music.
