Bernard Hopkins - Winky Wright: Round-by-Round

Saturday July 21, 2007
LIVE round-by-round coverage and unofficial scoring of the Bernard Hopkins - Winky Wright fight ...

Round One: Ugly round. Winky moving forward but not landing. Hopkins lands one good right. EVEN
Round Two: Winky the aggressor but doesn't land much. Hopkins warned for excessive holding. WRIGHT
Round Three: Bad cut over Wright's left eye from accidental (?) clash of heads as Hopkins bounces off ropes. Hopkins warned for using head. Wright frustrated. HOPKINS
Round Four: Hopkins continues to use head and hold. Wright tries to establish jab with little luck. WRIGHT
Round Five: Best action so far. Both men have their moments. WRIGHT
Round Six: Tough fight to score (as expected). Neither fighter has established any rhythm. EVEN
Round Seven: Winky chases Hopkins around but has trouble landing. Hopkins counters with some success. HOPKINS
Round Eight: Hopkins warned again for holding. Both men a little slow. Wright frustrated. HOPKINS
Round Nine: Hopkins gets 'final' warning for holding. Neither fighter accomplishes much. WRIGHT
Round Ten: Almost every round could be scored even. Decision will be controversial. WRIGHT
Round Eleven: Lots more holding. Ref urges both men to fight. Hopkins slightly sharper. HOPKINS
Round Twelve: Wright appears more fatigued. Neither man lands anything meaningful. HOPKINS

FINAL UNOFFICIAL SCORE: 5-5-2 DRAW. Draw actually feels right as neither man did enough to either win or lose.

FINAL OFFICIAL SCORE: 117-111, 117-111 and 116-112 all for Hopkins. Tough fight to score but no way Hopkins won nine rounds.

PUNCH STATS:
TOTAL: Hopkins - 152 of 640 (24%); Wright - 167 of 618 (27%)
JABS: Hopkins - 9 of 91 (10%); Wright - 87 of 290 (30%)
POWER PUNCHES: Hopkins - 143 of 549 (26%); WRIGHT - 80 of 328 (24%)

POST-FIGHT: Hopkins basically says scuffle at weigh-in was orchestrated to increase PPV sales. Hopkins calls out Joe Calzaghe for a fight at Yankee Stadium.

Wright says the head butt was unintentional but the resulting cut did bother him. Wright - as expected - thought he won and called the wide scores 'crazy'. Wright says he's moving back down to 160 or 154 and wants a fight with - who else - Oscar De La Hoya.

SUMMARY: The fight played out almost exactly as expected. I watch lots of big fights a second time to see if I can pick up anything I missed the first time. I can't imagine sitting through this one again. It wasn't boring but it sure wasn't exciting either.

Fortunately, the undercard produced two exciting matches. 21-year-old Jorge Linares won the interim WBC featherweight title with an impressive 10th-round TKO of veteran Oscar Larios. Also, Michael Katsidis overcame multiple nasty cuts to retain his interim WBO lightweight title with a unanimous decision over Czar Amonsot.

Nevertheless, even a better-than-expected undercard could do little to justify the unnecessarily hefty pay-per-view price tag of $49.95 . . .

however I am using another site and the scoring on HBO’s Letterman card is apparently 6-3 for Winky as opposed to your score in favor of hopkins.

(14) olskool4real says:

Was it worth the money folks? I call Bernard Hopkins a masterful boxer/fighter he is not I repeat is not going to bang unless that is an option. He is a smart or should I say smarter fighter than many of his opponents. He simply executes and it seems like these days that means win the fight by any means necessary.

(17) Chris says:

Let me say something about the final scoring, I bet hopkins tonight and won some decent coin since he was the under dog…but there is way to many shady activities in sports now….it seems gambling has infiltrated worse then ever yet nobody wants to care, soccer refs, basketball refs..all slowly being caught…but I know of at least 2 managers one being a head coach of a CFL team and dont be surprised if you start to hear things….my point is the outcome to all these sporting events (for the most part not all) have become swayed by someone trying to cover a spread….you think it’s not a big problem, but trust me it’s huge.

I didn’t want to order the fight for this reason. I knew it would be boring and I ordered it anyway. I am an Idiot. Hopkins did win the fight. But it was soooo boring. I love knockoutsssssss.

(20) Kenny says:

If they did it all over again winky would kick that ass, Hopkins got lucky, and is lucky winky got cut, by the headbutt, if the headbutt didn’t take place winky would of won the fight…

July 22, 2007 at 4:11 am
(21) Kenny Gardner says:

Winky has proven time and time again he is one of the best fighters, why does everybody always run from him, so he lost a fight, where you at Oscar De La Hoya, I think winky could win a decision over you or Floyd Mayweather….He aint skeered are yall??

(22) JIMMY says:

HOPKINS GETS ANOTHER FREE GIFT. THAT FIGHT WAS A DRAW. THE JUDGES FEEL SORRY FOR THAT CONVICT ALWAYS.

Glad I saved my money.. This sites overall review justified the waste in purchasing that Hopkins vs. Wright fight

July 23, 2007 at 12:02 am
(24) JustinB1 says:

more boring than i expected. Hopkins should have been penalized for holding and wright also got tired which created lot of the boring moments. Both fighters looked old and i dont see how some critics called this one entertaining. As far as UFC supposedly selling more than boxing. I have seen some really boring ufc. and grappling inbetween another guys legs just looks gay and happens a lot in ufc. people need to quit with the ufc vs boxing BS. They are 2 different sports. I respect the sweet science and there are definitely fights out there that are more exciting in my opinion than ufc- recently Judah/Cotto, Pavlik/Miranda. I could easily find a boring ufc match too

(25) Ken Hissner says:

I had Winky ahead but a draw is what they both deserved Calzaghe is calling Hopkins Ol Popkins very befitting

(26) Phil says:

I havn’t seen the fight but it sure sounds like Hopkins was the agressor or at least throwing the meaningful punches, and Winky was throwing alot of jabs. Most people are going to give a fighter more props for landing 1 power punch compared to 2 jabs. Anywhow like I said I didn’t see the fight, but if you said the rounds were hard to call why should Winky win 50% of them with a jab. I’d give any benefit of the doubt to the older legend in the ring , if it was that close. The younger man should have completely out worked the 42 year old B hop. I don’t think there would have been any questions or DRAW talk if a 36 year old Hopkins was fighting a 42 year old man. I shouldn’t even be writing, because I hadn’t seen the fight, but oh well. I can’t wait to see the replay this weekend.

(27) Eduardo Bravo says:

How come you have some rounds “Even” when there wasn’t any points deduction. Shouldn’t one of the fighters “win” every round? (at least on the scorecards).

July 26, 2007 at 9:38 am
(28) Jeff says:

I somewhat agree with your thought of a draw at the worst.Winky is too small to fight at 170 but I think during the middle rounds he was actually winning but faded late. These two are very defensive fighters which makes it difficult and there was alot of holding going on. I think if Winky stays at 154-160 he is ok. Hopkins is ok as light heavy, he has caleed out Joe Calzaghe which should be interesting fight.

July 28, 2007 at 7:38 am
(29) Ax says:

u can’t call rounds even man…..got give one of the fighters a 10-9….didn’t see the fight yet though.

(30) Donald Wolberg says:

The fight was very disappointing and I left convinced it was no more than a sloppy draw. I lost a good deal of enthusiasm for Hopkins. He was plain dirty and not worthy between his repeated head banging, shoulder banging, holding and hitting. Sure that is Hopkins but it is not worthy. Wright deserves great praise for courage and will..he made the fight. Hopkins pretty much hit and hold, hit and hold and bang heads. I thought both were too slow and too heavy to be really interesting, but it was a draw!
