Poll: Can Holyfield Defeat Ibragimov for Fifth Title?

Wednesday October 10, 2007
Only in boxing could a fighter 'earn' a title shot without having beaten a top ten opponent in over five years ... and still be given a decent shot at dethroning the 'champ'. Yet that's exactly what's happening this Saturday - in Moscow, Russia - as former champ Evander Holyfield tries to take the WBO belt from Sultan Ibragimov for an unprecedented fifth heavyweight title.

Holyfield (42-8-2) turns 45 next week and is under investigation for receiving steroids under an assumed name. Nevertheless, four straight wins over suspect competition have propelled him into a $5 million payday and allowed him to keep alive his delusional dream of retiring as undisputed heavyweight champion. Ibragimov (21-0-1), who won the title from a sleepwalking Shannon Briggs back in June, is set to receive $8 million.

Prediction: Fight will likely go 12 rounds and it's hard to imagine Holyfield doing enough to earn a decision at a neutral site, let alone in Russia! So Holyfield's best shot at coming home with a belt is to win by KO and he hasn't scored a KO in a title fight since he stopped Michael Moorer in eight rounds back in 1997. Plus, Ibragimov has a good chin and has never been stopped. Ibragimov by unanimous decision.

Who do you think will win? Holyfield or Ibragimov? Vote in our poll.

Note: Fight will be available on pay-per-view. Check local listings and be aware that, due to the time difference, the live broadcast in the U.S. will take place in the afternoon.

i believe by todays competition if joe louis wakes up from the dead he can get a title shot against these sub-par champions……..and win…..after lennox lewis there hasnt been a dominant champ..and since mike tyson the division has lost it’ luster…….so all that to say holyfield wins the WBO

Holyfield is not under investigation. That is pure BULLSHIT. He will KO the Sultan of Slop.

Evander has a heart bigger than whatever talent he has left and I worry for his well being. Ibragimov has knocked almost all the opponents of the same or better quality that EWvander has taken to decisions and he hits hard and he hits frequently. I would have hoped Evander would have retired five years ago, but I think if he loses big this time, this would be his last fight. He certainly does not deserve the shot, but all the power to him as a great warrior. Let’s hope he maintains his health.

On the contrary, I predict Holyfield to win by knock out. Holyfield is very well motivated to win this fight knowing that this might be his last chance to fulfill his dream of becoming an undisputed 5-time world champion in the history of heavyweight boxing.

I’ve followed Ibragimov and he’s totally able to dispatch Holyfield in 3 rounds. He should win by knockout but he wont because the fix is in and boxing needs some excitement, what could be better than Holyfield and another theatrical performance that gives him a fith belt and lures “Guess who” out of retirement, thats right Lennox Lewis is coming back for a one time rematch with Holy Field, Ibragimov will find his way back next fall, but by then maybe we can get Roy Jones or even Tarver to move up to heavy weight and out make-shift re-charge of the Heavies will be underweigh. The only real fight we’ll see is between Mayweather amd Hatton, because Hatton will loose but he will bring pressure and effort and try to turn the fight into another one of his wrestling matches so Floyd will need to box early and look to expose Hatton or look out Floyd you could get robbed in this one, the referee will be blind to all that Hatton does to be sure! ‘Watch out der Now Floyd!!!”

Holyfield got the fix in on this one, if this fight was on the level Ibragimov would knock him out in 3 rounds. I think this fight will pull Lennox of of retirement to fight Holyfield for a big purse, then Lennox wins by TKO and rematches with Klitchko and wins again and retires again. Maybe this will Lure Roy and Tarver up to Heavy weight for a lessor belt or something. Floyd/Hatton is the only true fight we’re gonna see and Floyd will get robbed unless he “Auturo Gatti’s” him, so watch it Floyd, satans up to his old tricks without a doubt my friend! Truth be told, Hatton wrestles, holds, hits low, and the ref will never take a point for it, not ever. Floyd you’ll need a flawless victory in this one.
