Roy Jones Outpoints Trinidad; Golota Wins Thriller
Jones was not particularly impressive and fought cautiously (what a shock!) until he was absolutely certain that Trinidad posed no threat whatsoever. Tito, famous for his heavy hands, outworked Jones in the early rounds but it was completely ineffective as he appeared to have nothing on his punches. Jones started clowning around in the middle rounds and also began to land effectively on the few occasions each round that he actually threw a few punches. Jones scored a delayed-reaction knock down in round seven with a right hand high on Trinidad's head. Trinidad was also knocked down in round ten but was never in real danger of being stopped as Jones - who has gone over five years without a KO - seemed content to leave the decision to the judges. The final scores read 117-109 and 116-100 twice, all for Jones.
After the fight, Jones predictably called out Joe Calzaghe -- even saying he'd go to Wales to challenge the undefeated super middleweight champ. Perhaps it was the knowledge that Calzaghe is all but set to fight Bernard Hopkins next ... or maybe, realizing that the end is near, he's desperate to remain relevant on the boxing scene. Either way, Jones was never this bold when he was in his prime and fight fans wanted to see him go to Germany to take on Dariusz Michalczewski. For his part, Trinidad recognized Jones was too quick for him but said he wasn't prepared to announce his retirement. Let's hope he reconsiders after watching the videotape of this fight.
On the undercard, Andrew Golota, 40, and Mike Mollo, 27, had the crowd on its feet during a 12-round heavyweight thriller. Golota proved too strong for the game Mollo, who refused to go down despite being wobbled on numerous occasions. Golota was lucky the fight made it the scorecards because the doctor would have been justified in stopping the fight in any of the later rounds as Golota's left eye looked like something out of a Rocky movie. The judges all had it for Golota: 118-109, 116-110 and 116-112. The biggest surprise of the evening may have been that Golota went the full 12 rounds without being penalized for doing anything dirty or illegal!
Also on the undercard, Alex Bunema stopped former champ Roman Karmazin in ten and Devon Alexander outpointed Demarcus Corley over twelve. For complete results, CLICK HERE.

amazing enough i felt roy just beat himself he promised a KO what happened Roy…..he was cautious for the 1st 5-6 rounds….and when he dropped TITO he did’nt move in to finish he played a carefully passive/aggressive counter puncher…he cant fight a Calzhage like that he’ll be out hustled maybe even dropped….and he better stay away from B-HOPS fighting like that he’ll get KO’D early….roy still has speed…his timing was off but he does have it….and his power is descent but not ferocious as in his youth….in order to retire at a p4p status he needs to beat…. Tarver, GlenJohnson,Calzahge and B-HOPS…..those 4 will put him back to great status….yeah it will be the 4th out jones tarver but Sugar Ray Robinson and Basillo or Jake Lamotta was up in the 4-5 times…..
I thought it was one of the better fights in boxing today but it wasn’t anything great or spectacular. Jones said he would go in 4 and he wasn’t even pressing at all in the FIRST FOUR! Trinidad should retire since he has no KO power left. The only big fights I can see him getting are a Mayorga or Winky rematch. But he’d still get beat up. Roy Jones needs to hang it up too. He’s calling out Joe? Joe would brutally KO him in the middle rounds. He should rematch B-Hop so theres no risk of getting KO’d. Both should retire. I TOO WAS SHOCKED AT THE CLEAN FIGHTING BY GOLOTA!
Calzahge ko-ing Roy but not B-HOPS to that i say huh?….look roy isnt what he use to be…but Cal aint that good yes he beat a limited slugger in Jeff Lacy and a loser off the contender in Peter Manfredo but up to that who else posed a viable threat….the person that was beating him up and him pulled out a questionable descision was to Reid and he would never rematch him…i wonder why….look cal record is impressive against B+ fighters but until i see him beat B-Hops which in all honesty i dont see him doing he’ll be a good A fighter not A+ yet
Why anyone would watch a Jones-Trinidad fight on PPV is beyond me. If it was a quiet Friday night and they were on ESPN so Teddy Atlas could call it as only he can, I might watch–Trinidad at 170 is bloated and Jones is way past whatever peak he had and no where near the condition of Bernard Hopkins. Jones-Calzaghe is a non-starter, but Hopkins-Calzaghe is a thriller in the making. Hopkins would use every dirty trick he has learned and Calzaghe overpowering with his speed and smarts. The only good out od Jones-Trinidad is that no one was badly hurt and they still have their brains. But enough is enough and it will do the sport no good to see either of them continue.
