Samuel Peter, Nate Campbell Win Belts

Sunday March 9, 2008
Samuel Peter scored a sixth-round TKO over Oleg Maskaev to capture the WBC belt in the first heavyweight title fight held in Mexico. Peter hurt Maskaev in the third but the 39-year-old champ, who was rusty after more than a year of inactivity, came back to hurt Peter later in that same round. Peter is still a somewhat crude slugger but his clubbing shots found their mark again in the sixth and this time he showed some patience and didn't let Maskaev recover. Referee Guadalupe Garcia jumped in to stop the action at the 2:56 mark with Maskaev badly hurt and nearly defenseless in the corner.

This fight was no classic but it was far more entertaining than the recent Wladimir Klitschko-Sultan Ibragimov stinker. Peter will likely fight a Klitschko next ... the question is which one? Wladimir is the IBF and WBO champ but brother Vitali - who was the WBC champ when he last fought more three years ago - may get the first shot at Peter. Vitali against Peter is intriguing but Wladimir, who got off the canvas three times to decision Peter in 2005, is the best heavyweight in the world and should fight Peter next to move the sport one step closer to a unified and undisputed heavyweight champ.

On the undercard, Nate Campbell did exactly what he said he'd do and beat up the previously undefeated Juan Diaz to capture the IBF, WBA and WBO lightweight titles. Campbell, 36, scored the upset by beating Diaz, 24, at his own game -- outworking him and, eventually, breaking him down. Diaz was effective early but was never the same after suffering a cut over his left eye in the sixth round. The fight was scored a split decision (116-111 and 115-112 Campbell and 114-113 Diaz) but there was no question the Campbell won the fight.

Also on the undercard, John Ruiz scored a unanimous decision over Jameel McCline in a bout which, thankfully, was not televised by HBO. Reports indicate it was a typically unwatchable Ruiz fight that was booed heavily by those fans that were able to stay awake through 12 uneventful rounds.

You Yanks seriously live in a bubble, not even a mention of the fact that two british fighters fought tonight to unifiy the cruiser weight division.
Stupid Yanks.

No one cares unless it’s Hatton or Calzaghe.

Campbell definitely won in my book, how it was a split was beyond me. But that cut was definitely the main factor. Peter’s going to unify all the belts. He’ll kill Vlad in a rematch IMO because Vlad will be running scared the whole time and Peter will KO him late in another stinker until at least peter turns up the heat after he’s losing from Vlad running and stealing rounds.

Also it was the cruiser weight division. Nobodies cared about that division except when Holyfield, Jones Jr., or James Toney ran it. Worst division in boxing in the heavier weights. Nobody sticks out at all so nobody cared.

Samuel Peter is a joke. He has power and that is it. If the referees will ever enforce the rules and stop him from clubbing his opponents in the back of the head, he will never win another fight. Watch the end of the 6th when Maskaev tries to motion to the ref about a shot to the back of the head – it happens against every fighter Peter fights. He i a dirty fighter who lacks only one thing worse than he lacks boxing skills – and that is intelligence. The guy really comes across as a rock.

A lot of people are aware of the Brits, and they have some authenically good fighters. Haye is defitely worth watching.

A completely miserable set of matches, both very unimpressive. Peter is slow, clubs, and runs out of steam really fast. It was hard to keep track of the back-of-the-head shots. We need a Davis Tua back on top again.
