Margarito Stops Cotto in 11!
Cotto, uncharacteristically in retreat mode the entire bout, was ahead on points through six but from that point on seemed to be racing to get to the final bell. The Terminator-like Margarito calmly stalked his opponent around the ring and seemingly sensed that Cotto wouldn't make it to the final bell. The end came at 2:05 of the eleventh when a bloodied and beaten Cotto took a knee for the second time in the round. When he rose to his feet the second time, his corner threw in the towel. Cotto did not protest.
Scoring: Through ten complete rounds, two judges had Margarito ahead 96-94. The third judge had it even 95-95.
Punch Stats: Total Punches: Margarito - 267 of 987 (27%); Cotto - 280 of 655 (43%). Total Jabs: Margarito - 30 of 340 (9%); Cotto - 101 of 260 (39%). Total Power Punches: Margarito - 237 of 647 (37%); Cotto - 179 of 395 (45%).
Ironically, Cotto was beaten in much the same fashion that he typically wins his bouts. Cotto fights rarely end mercifully with a one-punch knockout. Rather, they are sustained, methodical beatings in which he eventually breaks the will of his opponent. This fight was no different. Only this time it was Cotto that was on the receiving end of the vicious beating and, for the first time, it was he who had his will broken by the stronger, more determined fighter. It will be interesting to see how Cotto handles this defeat. Fighters who suffer their first professional defeat by decision - or even one-punch KO - will typically find a way to rationalize away such a setback. A beating that forces a proud fighter like Cotto to surrender is a different matter entirely.
Margarito, on the other hand, gets the biggest win of his career -- one which he hopes will earn him a lucrative payday with Oscar De La Hoya. Unfortunately for Margarito, his performance tonight was so impressive that De La Hoya may very well scratch him off his list of possible opponents for his 'final' fight.

margarito wins ko in 11
i never saw the fight too bad im here in KSA but i always believe margarito will win this fight..luckily cotto only lost his belt not his ear..hehehehe
This was with out a doubt and impresive figth, I was impress during the entirely figth , I like cotto but I wanted to Margarito to win. litterally i cross dangerous roads jsut to get to my dad’s house to see the figth, He lives in Juarez Mexico, and the area was flooded cuz the Huracaine dolly, wich came across , how ever It was soworth it and will be one of the best figths in boxing history I felt like if iwas there… and incredible figth finally i got to see an amazing show full of ecxitment and pure quality. They both put their hearts out. And there is more to come from Margarito. Watch out!!! You rock (Made in Mexico)
It was of the best fights I seen in a while, maybe because I wanted Margarito to win. Either way, I don’t think De La Hoya is going to want to retire with a possible lose in that fassion. Its has to be a blow to your confidence when you let off your best punches on someone and they just keep coming at you, and that’s exactly what happened. Cotto gave his best and Margarito shook it off like nothing.De La Hoya being so close to retirement better think twice before taking a chance at a loss like that.
It was a great fight. Not much more Cotto could have done, he hit Margarito with everything he had and was superior technically. It just wasn’t enough because of Margarito’s chin and size. How Margarito is even in Cotto’s weight class is beyond me. No one his size except for Williams and Citron will fight him though. Props to Cotto for maning up. Cotto should take no shame in this loss, and I hope to see him fight again!
I’m So Upset with Miguel Cotto Losing, That’s Just Upset the balance of the welterweight division, I thought He would unite the divsion, when he rocked him in round 7, i knew he was going to lose, Margarito was relentless in his pursit, he just would stop, Kudos to Him!
Cotto´s a great runner. All the running he did, in my estimation discredits any good he might have done in the contest. Had he stood his ground more and traded I would have more respect for him. He didnt even offer an interview, perhaps talking would have been difficult. Im glad he lost the way he did. A true beating. Fuerza Tijuanense!
Anyone who thinks Cotto was running is no boxing fan. Boxing is about having a plan, and sticking and moving was Cotto’s plan against a much bigger man, who has never been hurt by anyone. I would have loved to see Cotto trade with him, but that probably would not have been a great idea since even Citron(who is a much bigger puncher than Cotto) could not hurt him.
Cotto boxed beautifully, but a man that CAN’T be hurt like Margarito, has incredible stamina like Margarito and looks like a middleweight like Margarito can’t be beaten as he fought in this bout. Credit to both men, to me they’re both champions. Probably there isn’t a welterweight alive today that can finish 12 rounds with Margarito WITHOUT backing off. For me there is only one exception: His name is Paul Williams.
Cotto should have gone to the body.
Margarito went to the body and he slowed cotto down, and went with uppers after.
Had Cotto delivered the same damage to the body he would have maybe reached the final.Props to Margarito, Floyd, Oscar, anybody would have gone down with Cottos punches. What a chin!!!
I take my hat off to Margarito, and whoever predicted a Margo’s win. Congratulations to the Aztec Warior. Viva Mexico!!!!!
Cotto boxrd beautiful, he connected with great combos, but Margarito is to big for this weight division; he should be fighting at a higher division, also, I am curious how much he weighed on fight nighr. I bet he came in around 160lbs and up.
Cotto too small. Very similar to Pryor-Aguello.
Margarito is #1 I always thought margarito was the best boxer in the world. My 2 favorite boxers were margarito and mayorga. At least one of my boxers ended up beating the best. I think there is no one out there who can beat him. gaywether !!!!!!! hahahahahahahahahaha what a joke. de la hoya!!!!!sorry ain’t going to happen. so i say bring on paul williams I think margarito will beat him
I just think that Margarito won not for his restless attack, but because of the poor stamina that Cotto has.If Cotto was able to box the way he did at the first halt of the fight the entire way, he probably could have won the bout. It was a great fight, hope to see a rematch.
It would be better if Cotto will figth Paquiao in lightweight division.
Potacken (above) raises a good point. Cotto threw virtually no body shots for the whole fight. I can’t confidently say it would have changed the outcome, but I do remember wondering why Cotto didn’t assess what was in front of him (ie, the head shots are having no effect) & switch to the body – or at the very least begin to incorporate some body shots into his work. Congratulations to Margarito – one hard headed mofo who fought the perfect fight to defeat a great champion & prove himself one as well – but I’d be interested to see what would have happened had Tony started to take those monstrous body shots Cotto is known for.
You’re all right – Cotto landed a LOT of hard punches yet Margarito was never once stunned. Doesn’t anyone find that strange? Either Margarito is retarded, has titanium plates in his head, or he was juicing. Hopefully, there was a post-fight urine/blood test. Oh wait, I forgot, this is boxing – not a reputable sport.
I have always been impressed with Cotto’s footwork and was again. You could ding him for running, but defense is supposed to be scored. This was the best fight since Vasquez/Marquez and the best man won the fight because he was broken down by body shots and tried to head hunt too much with Margarito’s rock chin. I counted over 20 home runs that Cotto put on his head that would have taken out any other guy at this weight and he was never even slowed down by one of them. Rematch, please!
what a trilling match. i tuned to metro tv by chance. i didn’t intend watching the fight, but i got hooked up. cutto brought memories of ali, sugar ray & sweetpea. i wish 2 make him my friend. personally i don’t like magarito but he deserve praise 4 the relentless pressure he mounted on the admirable cutto. i look forward 2 clottey whippin the hell out of magarito. But hey delahoya old or not magarito shouldn’t dare
Cotto didn’t have the gut to take fight anymore. Just like his Cintron he quit against Margarito. He kneel to another man, and Cintron gave his back to Margarito. They don’t make them ilke they used to in Puerto Rico…
Charles,
The fact that Cotto could not hurt Margarito is not strange. He is not retarded (judge for yourself during the post-fight interview), he does not have titanium plates in the head, and he was not “juiced” up. It’s public record that he took a blood test right after the fight to dispel any myths that he took steroids. A smart move! It’s really simple…Margarito won fair and square and using old-fashioned tactics…blood, sweat and “ganas” (will).
yes margarito has titanium…but there call balls in mexico…y can u guyz just except the lost…cotto did.
And yes i know its (called) n (cant)…iam waiting 4 ur smart ass remarks..
I’ve seen these bout and I was amazed at Antonio Margarito, this is the first time i saw him fight and automatically he is one of my favorites now….
Margarito Is A Cheat He tried To Beat Mosley But It Don’t Happen We Tried To Cheat Buy Putting plastic in his Gloves That Is why they Got Him In His Mess I think he but Plastic In All The Figth He Had So He Is A Big Fat Loser Cottor Lose Because Margarito Cheat
margarito cheated … he’s chin is proven, but his power mistiriously went from descent to being TITO TRINIDAD…and all started with the cintron fights. only his comeback fights will tell…if he doesn’t get the parkinson before
cotto got cheated margarito hands were loaded everyone knows that!!
To all those mexicans that badmouth Cotto and Cintron. Puertoricans are not cheaters!!! Now Margarito,In the other hand, a fighter for which I used to have such a high respect, disappointed the boxing community. What a looser!!! One thing though, the guy has a chin as hard as his gloves. I hope he comes clean next time he fights.
miguel cotto is the best he will ko paquiao and margarito cheated in that match hes a CHEATER goooo cotto
