2008: 12 Big Fights Still to Come

Wednesday September 3, 2008
The Olympics used to be an opportunity for fight fans to see good boxing action and observe future stars getting their first international exposure. Not anymore. Ridiculous computerized scoring, mandatory headgear and two minute rounds are among the reasons that amateur boxing no longer appeals to many professional fight fans. The good news is that the Olympics are over and won't be back until 2012. There's only four months left in 2008 but there's plenty of good fights slated to take place between now and year-end, including (in chronological order):

Joel Casamayor vs. Juan Manuel Marquez
Sergio Mora vs. Vernon Forrest II
Nate Campbell vs. Joan Guzman
Shane Mosley vs. Ricardo Mayorga
Samuel Peter vs. Vitali Klitschko
Antonio Tarver vs. Chad Dawson
Kelly Pavlik vs. Bernard Hopkins
Antonio Margarito vs. Joshua Clottey
Joe Calzaghe vs. Roy Jones Jr.
Jermain Taylor vs. Jeff Lacy
Ricky Hatton vs. Paul Malignaggi
Oscar De La Hoya vs. Manny Pacquiao

Check out our full schedule of upcoming fights for details on these and other bouts on the boxing calendar.

I dont know if its me but these Big 12 just piss me off. Its a Bum fest…. Wheres the modern day Joe Louis, Mike Tyson or Roy Jones? This list is evidence that Boxing is really in trouble. Notice Muhammed Ali wasnt mentioned, theres only one G.O.A.T….

In fact, I totally disagree with the post. Short rounds make the amateur boxing much more dynamic, head gear is to distinguish between sport and slaughter which is the professional version. And anyway, professional boxing is more like a show (hence the length – to let the spectators enjoy it), not a kind of sport. I consider myself as the one who prefers to go in for sport rather than watch it with a glass of beer and a bag of popcorn :)

(4) Derrick says:

Pacquiao will destroy Oscar de la Hoya by either unanimous decision or TKO. If de la Hoya keeps on running like with his fight vs. Mayweather, it’s going to be a split decision for Manny. Mark my words.
