Paul Williams Punishes Winky Wright

Sunday April 12, 2009
Ronald 'Winky' Wright has long been considered 'boxing's most avoided fighter'. That unofficial title has now been officially passed to Paul 'The Punisher' Williams. Wright, 37, came back after 21 months of inactivity and displayed the ring generalship, defensive skills and toughness that have always been his trademarks. Unfortunately for Wright, none of that mattered as the 27-year-old Williams was a non-stop punching machine for every minute of every round. Wright continually looked to land a big punch to try and score the improbable KO but Williams was as elusive as he was active. Neither fighter was cut and there were no knock downs. In the end, it was an easy fight to score with all three judges having Williams the winner by wide margins: 120-108 and 119-109 twice. Williams is looking for big fights at 147, 154 or 160 ... if he can just get someone to agree to fight him.

Punch stats: Total Punches: Williams - 247 of 1,086 (23%); Wright - 116 of 511 (23%). Power Punches: Williams - 177 of 667 (27%); Wright - 76 of 271 (28%).

In the co-feature, Chris Arreola remained undefeated with a fourth round KO of Jameel McCline. Arreola, despite a jiggly midsection, was too much for McCline, who has now lost four of his last five and appears ready to retire at 37. The typically durable McCline was knocked down by a right hand midway through the fourth round and seemed to have the ability but not the desire to beat the count of referee Tony Weeks. Arreola - unlike most of his fellow heavyweight contenders - is an aggressive, entertaining-to-watch fighter who would make an intriguing opponent for either Klitschko ... especially if he dedicated himself to actually getting in shape to fight full 12 rounds.

McCline was never in the fight and Areola wwas not very impressive. He was almost as out of shape and easily hit as McCline, who should have stayed in retirement–but he did get one more payday. The heavyweight blues is still there. What ever happened to David Tua!!

Paul Williams and Winky Wright was another dead fight. Williams was too tall and too fast for Wright. Against people his own size Wright would still be competitive. Against hard hitters, which Wright has never been, Williams would get clobbered. He is easily hit, does not have much power and is just plain awkward. He has always been bigger than his opponents, but his hitting is more slapshots than effective punching–just a lot of it. He is not an exciting fighter. In with a very fast and very hard hotter like Shane Mosley, Williams would likely crumble. If he bulked up and looked at a real middleweight, he would crumble faster.

Hello Boxing fan’s,

In order for Floyd mayweather to say he is truly the best fighter pound-for-pound in the world he must defeat Paul Williams. I’m not taking anything away from Manny P but honestly floyd would wind up knocking him out. Paul Williams is a different kind of fighter all together. Floyd must truly bring his A game in order to defeat this man. He is the energizer bunny if you will. Paul Williams that is! I’m an ex-middleweight fighter who has seen it all.Well! expcept anything like Paul the punisher Williams. Who he has the reach of Thomas hitman Hearn’s, the boxing ability & also a decent chin as well. The man is simply relentless, Floyd will have his work cut out for him that evening. I know Floyd and i think he is a great fighter however if he was to beat a Paul Williams then i would give him the credit or put him up there with the likes of a Sugar Ray Leonard,Hearns,Hagler etc….

Not that i am discrediting Floyd for what he has accomplished already but those guy’s were great fighter’s & great men as well. Floyd just has a few more step’s to take & he’ll be among those great fighter’s of yesterday.

Sincerely,

Anthony”BadBoy”Brown
