Klitschko Forces Chagaev to Quit

Saturday June 20, 2009
IBF/WBO heavyweight champ Wladimir Klitschko (53-3) dominated previously undefeated Ruslan Chagaev (25-1-1) for nine completely one-sided rounds before Chagaev decided there was no point in continuing and elected not to come out for the tenth round. Klitschko dropped Chagaev with a left jab, straight right combination in round two and cut the WBA "champion in recess" over the left eye in round eight. Chagaev's only cleanly landed punch of the fight was a left hook immediately after the bell to end round seven. Chagaev, who had no answer for Klitschko's precision punching, absorbed a lot of punishment late in round nine so it was no surprise that he remained on his stool when the bell rang to begin round ten.
