Johnny Tapia Behind Bars ... Again

By , About.com GuideJuly 7, 2009

Follow me on:

Troubled former world champ Johnny Tapia was taken into custody in New Mexico after violating the terms of his parole. A corrections spokesperson indicated that Tapia traveled without permission, entered a bar and was involved in some type of verbal confrontation - all violations of his parole.

The 42-year-old Tapia's last fight was in 2007, but he's been fighting assorted demons outside the ring for many years.

Sheesh, Johnny.

At some point you just have to throw your hands up and pronounce the guy a moron.

Johny was screwed up from the beginning. Unbelievably tough childhood that led to problems in adult life.

He tried to climb out, but couldn’t make it.

In the meantime he gave us some of the greatest fights in his weight class.

I feel sorry for him.

I’d like to see this guy Dean call him a moron to his face.

Well, Jim – no disputing his skills as a boxer – he’s provided many entertaining moments in the ring and is a true warrior.

How about this – I’ll revise my comment and instead of stating that Johnny is a moron, I’ll say instead say that his behavior is moronic. I mean, c’mon – he’s violated parole countless times for drug use, etc.

Feel better now, Jim?

Johnny just couldn’t climb that hill. He tried, but he couldn’t make it to the top.

I just don’t like to hear somebody taking shots at a guy who’s down. There’s too much of that goin’ on.

Now I feel even better.

I got to see Johnny Tapia in the Red River parade July 4th. People where walking up to him and he was hugging each and every person who approached him. How could his Probation Officer not know that he was going to be in Red River that weekend… It was all over the news days before! Seems to me like he was set up to fail… Pretty sad.

Johnny. Reguardless of any foolish things said to u or about u- it does not matter. The lord jesus christ is ur only savior. He is the only one who can give it and take it away. Seek him and u shall find him. People think that god always let’s us down and we easily get discouraged and lose our faith. But have we ever come to think that we are letting him down? God is good, he is merciful, and so proud of u johnny. Make ur father proud. Get clean. Stay out of trouble. And be a father to ur kids and a husband to ur wife. And may god bless u always brother.

I am not even a boxing fan but I had the opportunity to get to know Johnny and and his family while living in Las Vegas. For about 6 months, I spent time in his home and heard much of his story from his own mouth. My walk-a-way opinion of Johnny Tapia
(and his wife Theresa) is that they are two of the most caring, giving and loving people I have ever met.

Although I never voiced my opinion, I believe the Tapias were taken advantage by many business associates. His battles were outside the ring as well as in the ring. At least in the ring he knew who his opponent was.

Johnny has fought his demons for so long that I am sure, at times, he thinks they are his friend. Johnny truly has God in his heart and in his soul. Johnny’s tribulations on earth are tough but there is a special place for him when he gets to heaven.

Johnny, if you were to meet me on the street you would not remember me but I remember you and I know that your fans love you and, as you know, Jesus Christ loves you and it doesn’t get any better than that.

Johnny Tapia’s life is proof that life can be very hard but we can be very strong. I wish you peace and comfort in your heart my brother.

I met Johnny Tapia in San Antonio, I think he’s a great guy with a lot of spirit, spunk, vitality, friendly, kind, loving, funny, hyper, talkative, and just a regular guy to talk with. Johnny and only Johnny can help himself. I know he loves boxing, so maybe he should open up a gym and teach others how to box. Stay true to your sport that got you everything you have.
