On May 22, 1993, Roy Jones Jr. scored a unanimous decision over Bernard Hopkins (116-112 on all three cards) to win the vacant IBF middleweight title. A rematch has been discussed for the past 16 years ... now it looks like it will finally happen - when the two future Hall of Famers will be a combined age of 86!
Contracts for the rematch have been signed by both fighters with a target date of early 2010. The contract calls for a 50/50 split with a reported 60/40 split in the unlikely event the winner scores a KO or TKO.
Hopkins has discussed a Dec. 2 tune-up and Jones is currently slated to face Danny Green in Sydney, Australia on that same date. Don't bet on either man risking the big money attached to the rematch with a meaningless bout in the interim.
Who do you think will win? Hopkins or Jones? Vote in our poll!

OK Imma give it to Roy again, another unanimous decision. RRRRRoy Joooneessss Juuuuuunnniiiooorrrr!!!!!!!!!! You heard it here first…..
What a joke! Two relative has-beens re-living a dream. A dream to pocket some dough and that’s about all.
What ever happened to the Roy Jones, Jr who VOWED never to offer a rematch to any fighter who lost to him? He woudln’t give Bernard his due cause he knew Bernard would gain his retribution. Albeit, in my eyes Hopkins won that fight 16 yrs ago and got robbed. Many will agree to that. Roy also ducked the Ukranian champ Daruisz Michalshewski (sp?) some 13 or so years ago while RJJ was clearly in his prime, even after he called Roy out several times but RJJ was “too cool” to travel O-seas or to even negotiate that match. Why? Cause he knew he’d get his ass kicked. Why not sign Roy or Bernard to fight Calzaghe? Either would be interesting, even at their ages. BUT….they’d have to travel to Great Britain as Joe won’t EVER come to the US. Sad but true.
I’ve always liked Roy and Bernard. Both are tough, gritty, highly entertaining and all business in the ring but that was “then”. Both had their heyday but face it…they aren’t big draws anymore, at least from my perspective. And I’m still bothered by the fact that Roy holds a grudge or bit of animosity towards Marvelous Marvin Hagler, refusing to give him any credit for his tenure in dominating the Middleweight division as the undisputed champ for nearly 7 years in the 80’s. Why is that you ask? Well, maybe it has to do with the 3rd round KO beatdown by Marvelous of RJJ’s daddy – Roy Jones Sr back in 1977. Ya think?
I’d root for Bernard in hopes for a KO in this one just because of the revenge factor but this match will likely go the distance and be every bit exciting as if putting a fight together with the Klitchko Bros. Really, what senseless fool would ever want to consider having two brothers fight each other? You’d get more physical contact by allowing them to face each other in a game of checkers. Jeeeezzzz, c’mon people. Start making sense and find a better way to infuse boxing with positive, sensible fights. It’s a dying sport.
BTW- congrats to Shane Mosely for squaring off to Mayweather after his win. Sugar doing that may have been a tad disrespectful in some regard but did anyone see the fear in Floyd’s eyes, or was it just me?
Mosely vs. Mayweather = MONEY!!!!!
Finally Jones Hopkins 2 ,this will be a good fight,I know Bernard is a great fighter beaten Traver, Wright, Pavilk and a tough fight with Calzaghe. But I belived that Roy will beat him again because Roy is not Wright Pavilk or Traver who have beaten Roy twice .just remember Taylor beaten Bernard twice,Pavilk a great fighter who have beaten Taylor and Bernard have beaten Pavilk I will enjoy this fight
I’m glad Mayweather outed Mosley about his steroid use. If I were Floyd I wouldnt give Mosley a fight because he’s a cheat. Cotto beat the crap out of Mosley and Mosley lost his chick then turned to steroids. Anyway, Bernard and Roy will make money, the fight I really wanna see is Mayweather Paquiao, I know Floyds gonna man handle the little Asian but just like Marquez’s piss drinkin self, I wanna see that stupid frustrated look on all the asians faces after thier cultural pride takes another complete ass whoopin…. Drumming up false Machismo, songs, and all that crap will never make you guys a “Pitbull” your a legion of Chiuauas…Face it, stay on the porch when the big dogs are on the prowl or get you buttcheeks handed to you again, with a glass of piss to go…lol….Peace!!
lito. You are a racist and disgusting! Your comment is as useless as you are to the world. How could you use “peace” at the end of your comment after saying all those things, man??
Well Well Well.
I remember this fierceness and tenacity it took to agree the first fight. Lots of batering on who is the bigger draw and who gets what. I’m glad there is a rematch because both are past the peak of their powers.
The question is who has aged better. It’s definitely Hopkins. I saw Jones jr against Calzaghe and the Jones of old would have eaten him alive! So I have to favour a still dedicated and in great shape Hopkins. Hopkins has to his credit maintained a lengthy boxing career simply due to his style and way of life.
Should be a good fight.Punchers never lose their punch.
Pity they did not have this re-match 15 year’s ago.
Though it will still be fascinating.
Very hard to call this one.
I’m going for Hopkins by decision.
Lito you’re a muppet.
Mayweather should NOT give mosley a shot? Why should he? You can look on youtube mayweather is begging Mosley to fight him in the past & he wanted nothing to do with the fight. Now since Mosley is all washed up he wants a shot at the best pound for pound fighter??
But back to the topic. I hope Hopkins wins by KO, it should do semi well PPV wise.
My apologies to all of you with my commentary on RJJ and BHop fighting Joe Calzaghe. What the hell was I thinking? After making those previous remarks, it completely slipped my mind that Joe Calzaghe did in fact have bouts with both guys in 2008 and beat them equally. Although both did put Calzaghe down in the first round, he went on to decisively win on points with the closer margin going to Hopkins. No matter, Calzaghe has proven himself against two old guys who have nothing left in the tank. I must be getting old (with little left in my tank) with the gross oversight to recall two recent bouts that really were lopsided. Damn I’m gettin’ old! I really believe that Jones could have KO’d Calzaghe ten or twelve years ago, but once again…neither could come to terms with the venue location. Desperate times called upon Jones, a boxer clearly beyond his prime and in the twilight of his career to finally suck it up and travel to England for the sake of money and nothing more, only to lose.
I also realize that my previous remarks on Mosely/Mayweather have nothing to do with this thread and I apologize for engaging my thoughts on that. I’m sure many will agree there is no question that this bout would be boxing at it’s best, fight of the year or whatever you want to call it. In the words of Paul Reiser, “I’m just sayin!”
phlogger unreal!! few points for u put ur brain in gear before u open your mouth “decisively win on points “-wrong- split decision. “come to terms with the venue location” joe didnt want tht fight for obvious reasons. “Calzaghe down in the first round” we know, so why are u tryin 2 clarify u know what ur talkin about when u clearly dont. “travel to England for the sake of money and nothing more” they fought in New York!! lol, for money, honestly lol r u jealous?
thts his job fight for money
“It’s a dying sport” jumping on tht bandwagon r u? ask mayweather pac man n co ie. top earners if its a dyin sport. sorry for offense but some things have 2 be said
ahhhh i feel better now
Roy is the best boxer ever. The problem he had recently and still likely has is mental: he is not fighting, not punching the opponents which inspires the opponents. If Roy resolves this issue, and fights at least 60 % of his prime he will never get beaten again. Roy stands the way above the second best in whole history of boxing.
This will be a boring match I think. Hopkins is so much better than Jones, has fought the best in the world, most lots younger, and is much smarter. Jones is slower, is reasonably easy to knockout and getting knocked out is more and more likely after fighters go down more than once. Jones largely built a carefully managed career on lesser opponents. Hopkins built a career on doing enough to win, and usually does. He is the smarter figher with more moves and should take out Jones in 8.
Enjoy the show.
Pacweather and Marvin, you guys only look competitive when youre fighting each other. “How bout another round of warm piss homie?” “This Puds for you!”…lol And I’m not racist but all those songs and flag waving are examples of thinly veiled racism. Face it guys, youre simply not good enough to be a true pound for pound champ, its not in your DNA. I know, I know, Jermain Taylor right, well you guys better pray he never discovers his toes, if he does, he’ll comeback and take back his belt, and he’s still young enough to do it. Although I know he’s a buster whose lost it. Just thought I’d offer some diagnosis. To the upcoming Jones/Hopkins fight I say I’ll be laughin at you guys again, Jones is gonna win another unanimous decision….Marquez got beaten up and Pacman is next in line for an “EASY ASS WHOOPIN!!!…” Ahhh Haaaa….. “Heres mud in your eye” “Go make up another song or somethin”…LOL But heres food for thought, Sugar Ray Leonard would have destroyed Mayweather Jr. Just like he destroyed Mayweather Sr., Can you all produce a “Sugar Ray Leonard?” No? Then you’ll NEVER Beat Mayweather, he can fight till he’s 45-50 and still retain his belt. Sad isnt it…Yeah I know… Try not to cry sooooo loud will ya….. Pacman is a shrimp po boy with lettuce and hot sauce dude. Serve him up!
As as I watched Taver- Jones one it looked to me that Taver had won but when I totaled up my personal score card I had Jones the winner. The reason was that Taver who appeared to be the superior, had basicly given away the closing rounds. Antonio did prove that he was really the superior fighter insubsequent return bouts. Hopkins was superior to Taver when they met and was not as well devoloped as a fighter in his fight with Jones. One can never be sure with a fighter as advanced in age as Bernard but I beleive if they were both at their very best then Hopkins would clearly beat Roy Jones Jr.
Okay “corrector”…you’re entitled to your opinion or whatever you wish to call it. FYI…after I posted my initial comments I spent hours pondering the significance or in this case the useless-ness of this upcoming fight when it dawned on me I’d overlooked the fact that Calzaghe had in fact beat both of these washed-up cats. Yeah, Joe came to the Garden and rose from the canvas in the 1st to bloody and batter Jones on his own turf – sadly enough. Beat B-Hop soundly too after suffering a 1st rd. knockdown. Back in the day, Roy refused to meet Calzaghe on British soil which in my opinion was stupid because I firmly believe Roy could have KO’d Joe but he let pride obscure that vision.
I usually remember good fights going back to the early 70’s but those 2 bouts obviously lacked in the memorability dept., hence the reason why I felt so compelled to adend my error. Sorry man, but 04-05 weren’t good years for Roy & he hasn’t been the same since suffering KO’s by Tarver and Johnson. I’ll reiterate how much it pisses me off about Roy spouting how he absolutely “would not give rematches to guys he’d beaten” – his own words. Yet he begged for rematches with Tarver & Glenn Johnson only Johnson wasn’t dumb enough to give him a 2nd shot and Jones deserved that.
So “corrector”, it’s not my intention to engage in a verbal sparring match of hostility or misdirected animosity with you and your obvious gross inability / attempt to form words/type/spell, etc. just to get your feeble-minded point across. I appreciate your opinion(s) and even respect them to a certain degree, but if you want to gain FULL respect and credibility and rise from the canvas of worthlessness as you choose to wail shots of bogus commentary – take a moment to check yourself and your work before you turn in your assignment there punchy.
I think this is absolute BS!!!
Jones has not even fought Green yet who is a dangerous fighter with a very heavy punch, this is extremely arrogant of Jones and I’ll be on the floor laughing when Green ko’s him, and it’ll be just as devistating as the Tarver and Johnson ko’s…………..then what Jones ya dick!
All that said, I think Hopkins would win with ease this time round, he as aged better as a fighter out of the 2.
Lito………Mr tough on the net, coward in the real world. Everyone know’s guys like you are little anemic weezels that sit behind their computer all day.
Poor little Lito, you might be tough one day, just keep trying mate.
ROY JONES JR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Common cents, (and dollars). It is in fact a match of money. And it is in fact a match on “macho-ism”. But common dollars and common sense shows BHop winning, if not by a brutal decision then by knock out. Anyone who knows of boxing knows a puncher never losses his punch, and a boxer does lose his speed.
roy is going to win by ko
this is a joke and its on ppv good luck i wont be ordering it
Hahahahaha Roy got his face punched in by the thunder from downunder, Danny Green. In the first round, there was such a hubub about the fight going to be a great one and then it turns out a waste of money cause he got his block knocked of in 2 mins what a waste, im going to give it to Hopkins and in the first round once again!!!
well if you know boxing hopkins will win bhop is the best fighter ever hes never been ko never been whip hes lost only by decision thats why hes the best and hes fought everybody ..he put trinida into to retire and that was on trinidad prime oscar ko oscar in his prime and many more if you look at his record they only match i always wanted to see is mosley n bhop but that was not gonna happend bc they work for goldenboy..so bhop it gonna make jones like johnson all over again well maybe another decision remember they re both old..lol
As I said before the Jones Green fight, Green would win easy! Green Ko’ed Jones in impressive style, now this Jones Hopkins fight is just a farce, just a money making ploy. Neither of them get any credibility here, Jones got Ko’ed buy Green so IF he wins against Hopkins (which I don’t think he will) everyone will know Green would most likely Ko them both, but if Hopkins wins all he did was bet an already beaten fighter so where is the respect there?
Just a load of American BS….I won’t be paying for this fight.
Look the two r good fighters even though Roy talks a lot of s**t. But my votes go for the “X”. ROY MAY NEED SOME NEW TOYS BACK AT HOME THAT’S WHY HE’S COMING BACK TO FIGHT FOR THE PAYOUT. But to each his own, may the best man win. Even though Bernard is my good friend
