One-Handed Boxer Wins Pro Debut

By November 21, 2012

Being born without a right hand would seem to rule out professional boxing as a career. Don't tell that to Michael Costantino. The 33-year-old cruiserweight wears a glove over the nub at the end of his arm and uses the shorter arm primarily for defense.

Costantinio's application for a boxing license received extra scrutiny from the New York State Athletic Commission but was ultimately approved. In his pro debut at the Aviator Sports Arena in Brooklyn, Costantino used his good left hand to score a second round TKO over Nathan Ortiz. Costantino stunned Ortiz with a looping left and, when Ortiz clearly didn't want to continue, referee Randy Neumann stopped the fight.

Costantino, who had ten amateur fights before turning pro, hopes his victory inspires anyone struggling with a physical handicap that anything is possible.
