Review: Contender Episode 6
Monday April 4, 2005
Episode six of NBC's "The Contender" was slightly more entertaining than last week's snoozefest ... but not by much. The show's formula is entirely too predictable: recap of last week, winning team gets to go out and celebrate, losing team stays behind to sulk, silly/meaningless team challenge, fight pairing and - finally - the fight. The manufactured drama this week surrounded Anthony "#1 Daddy" Bonsante not calling out the fighter he and his teammates had agreed he would fight and then his teammates all turning on him and rooting for his opponent, Brent "Born Again" Cooper, to knock Bonsante out. No such luck. Bonsante pounded Cooper into submission in three one-sided rounds. At least this week's fight produced, for the first time in the series, a decisive victory. The coming attraction suggests that Bonsante and Ishe Smith will be hyped as the next big "grudge" match. Whatever.
