Lewis Defeats Holyfield

Dateline: 11/14/99

Last night in Las Vegas, Lennox Lewis (35-1-1, 27 KOs) scored a unanimous decision over Evander Holyfield (36-4-1, 25 KOs) to add Holyfield's IBF and WBA titles to the WBC belt he already controlled. Lewis becomes the first undisputed heavyweight champion of the world since Riddick Bowe took all three belts from Holyfield on a 12-round decision in Las Vegas on Nov. 13, 1992.

In their first meeting, on March 13, Lewis landed 348 punches to 134 for Holyfield and the fight was scored a draw. In last night's rematch, Lewis outlanded Holyfield by a much narrower margin, 195-137, but was awarded a unanimous decision by a comfortable margin. While Lewis definitely deserved a win in the first fight, it would have been difficult to argue if last night's fight had been scored a draw.

Nevertheless, the three judges - each with impeccable credentials - saw the bout as relatively one-sided: Chuck Giampa at 116-112, Bill Graham at 117-111 and Jerry Roth at 115-113. See each judge's official round-by-round scorecard below.
